Hi, just wondering, do I check the power steering fluid with the ignition on or off? I checked the level with nothing on and it seems fine, but steering is making whining noises on full lock. A friend says my steering is heavy compared to his audi.

Thanks.

You shouldnt hold your steering at full lock, it will whine if you do, its over working the pump. Full lock should only be very brief uses, if its whining, "while" your turning, then yes your pump is prob seeing the end of its life. But if its only during full lock then its fairly normal, unless its very loud noise.

Audi always will have a lighter steering, they dont share the same power rack or pumps, well the mk1 doesnt at least.

What he said ^^^^ , don't hold your car on full lock for longer than necessary.

Power steering fluid should be checked at best with ignition off, engine at operating temperature. Other marques such as Mercedes-Benz mark the dipstick according to engine temperature so you always know what to expect, VAG does not. Difference from the MIN to MAX lines on the dipstick means less than 100ml
