Strange vibrating/shuddering!

I've noticed this happen a few times but not always. Anyway, when I am doing say 30 and in 4th gear and begin to accelerate, as the revs hit around 2K, the whole car vibrates and shudders very violently (no exaggeration, it's also pretty noisy too) for about 500K's worth of revs then settles back down again! It "seems" to come from the left hand side which I believe is where the turbo is, and also around the revs where the turbo would be kicking in so I am wondering if it's that?

As I said, it doesn't happen every time I do this, but when it does, it definitely is not normal!

The vibration feels a bit like when your traction control kicks in when you accidentally hit 2nd too hard in the wet (ie, the wheels juddering) but a lot faster.

Anybody any idea what this might be? I wanna try and get it to happen all the time before I take it into the dealer else I know they'll turn around and say "we couldn't find anything when we tried it!".

does it do it in 6th when flooring it from the same rev range?

I had a new flywheel on it not so long ago under warranty, however now you mention it, it's doing a similar thing now as what it were doing then (juddering when stationary)!!
It's got 47K on altogether however the flywheel change was only at about 40K miles if I remember correctly.

I've not tried it in th however I will do later. Any reasno whyth and 6th wold produce the problem but not other gears?

Well, I would suspect that if it does it in 4th it would do it in the higher gears too .. i.e 5th and 6th.

the vibration is caused by it hitting the end of the springs in the DMF.... as the springs weaken, it will get worse ..

Mines out of warranty, but its doing it in 6th at present..... so fully expecting it to get worse over time.

Just checked when I had it done and it turns out the new flywheel has only been in three months!! Surely it shouldn't have gone in that amount of time, and after only 7K miles? I'm wondering whether they put in a re-conditioned one or something with it being a warranty claim...?

I’ve got a FR TDI Mk11 and get a similar sounding vibration phenomenon when i hit 80-90 MPH (4th/5th/6th). Just gives that uneasy feeling. I’ve just had a 40k service and no issues were reported. Only recently noticed this though and thought it may be wheel alignment or something???

Probably something totally different so sorry for jumping in on thread. I was also going to take to dealer but am fearful of the 'didn’t happen when we tried' etc...

I've just booked mine in for 2 weeks time - they can keep the bloody thing until they find out what the problem is!!!

I've hinted to them that it's doing the same as last time as well so hopefully they'll look at the flywheel and if it is that, then pick up the problem.

Not sure what yours sounds like but on mine, the whole car shakes and makes me feel very uneasy about it - wouldn't want to be driving anywhere too far whilst it's like this for the fear of it giving up the ghost in the middle of nowhere sometime, especially as I don't have AA cover any more! :)

AFAIK - it wont ever break down, but the shuddering will get worse (i.e. just under normal acceleration it will start to judder) if you continue to "ride the torque" as the turbo spins in at around the 1800 - 2200 mark.

Gently accelerating or using a lower gear so the revs are higher and out of that high torque area will mean it shouldn't do it.


Is yours remapped? strange for non-remapped cars to do it especially on such low mileage.
