Gear Crunching!

Hi All,

Every so often, maybe couple of times a month I crunch my gears by bringing up the clutch too soon when the gears not fully in, basically just being lazy with my changes when trying to change gear fast!

Was just wondering if it's doing any harm at all besides being embarrasing lol?

Cheers,
Ross

i kick myself too, ive hardly ever done it before. i must of done it about 10 times since i had my ibiza, including today :( i wouldnt mind so much but my gearbox goes quite stiff for a few days afterwards. hope it aint too badly damaged

i think with the ibiza gearbox you cant get away with changing gear unless the clutch is fully in, even if its slightly out

The tips of the teeth on the gears can brake off, you then get little bits of metal in the gearbox oil floating about inside your gearbox:no:

there's a magnet in there to collect all the bits so they aren't flying around...as long as you're not constantly doing it you should be ok

You don't need to change gear quickly to drive quickly - it's a common mistake people make.

The police train their advanced drivers to count "1000.. 2000.." as they change gear - that's the sort of timing you want - ie. "1000..(neutral), 2000.. (next gear)" Quick snappy gear changes will just put unnecessary strain on the box

I had this trouble with my Ibiza last year, i took it back to the dealership and they had a look at it. In the end they flushed the old gearbox oil out and replaced it with Mineral Oil, it seems to have solved the crunching and not had it since!

Yes but the bits of metal can float about for quite a while before the magnet picks them up.

It won't be doing the gearbox any good, I would drain the gearbox and refill it will clean oil.

Nice easy job to do, should only take an hour or two, the slowest part is refilling the gearbox with new oil, with btw stinks like you would never believe! Just use a plastic sports bottle with one of those "sports caps" on it to fill it again, a 500ml one should work a treat.

Having the metal floating about is the same as pouring a handful of sand into your oil cap on top of the engine, then going for a good long drive! :funk:

And that's why scrap yards smell the way they do
