Random rant & tyres

The goodyear asys all seem to be extra load (XL or reinforced, depending on the site you go to). The manufacturer page confirms this. I can't post an URL 'cos I haven't posted enough .

So, my question is: aren't extra load tyres unnecessary for Leons, and if so doesn't that mean the tyres aren't so good for this car?

Sorry if I'm being dim!

XL tyres have reinforced sidewalls, for heavy cars, or in the case of leons, cars which put additional stress on the sidewalls (i.e cornering like a bas*ard :D ) last thing you want is your low profile tyre rolling over and the alloy digging into the tarmac as you've gone round a roundabout slightly quicker than normal :)

I am now running nitrogen in my tyres, and it certainly seems the tyres get less hot and less rise in pressure after a real hard blast. Am running 32 front and 29.5 psi rear.

YesI had real problems getting up a hill in snow, when other people could! this was with F1 assymetrics.

Dan, do you think that was the assymetrics specifically, or just wide tyres in general, as I have certainly noticed in the past on other cars that wide, low profile tyres are just hopeless on a snow covered incline ? :(

When I had the michelins on the car was just as useless in snow. Maybe a 10 degree slope from standstill on snow and ice and I had to get pushed up it by a couple of nice people. (Driving out of a car park).

They were pretty much fit for the bin, however - still had some decent tread on them, but maybe the rubber was getting on a bit. No grip whatsoever.

I personally think it's the wide tyres in general that are rubbish. The tread pattern certainly won't help matters with the asymmetrics; of that I'm sure, but on that size of tyre, especially summer tyres... you're better off walking.

Just rotated my tyres this aft - proper rotation after 7000m (opposite corners)
And a little bit of copper grease on the hubs to stop the 2 metals reacting and to make it easier to remove wheels next time around..

This forum is great for pickin up little tips.

And for the record, I'm keepin' the K1 now. Gettin' REVO'd before the deadline

Whats the benefit of nitrogen in the tyres. I was working on an airplane a few weeks ago and noticed the tyres were inflated with nitrogen.

Nitrogen expands less than normal air when the temperature increases. So you have a more stable pressure value in the tyre. Planes are touching down around 200mph and putting alot of heat into the tyre in the process. F1 cars do the same, but in that case it is so the engineers are able to reliably change the tyre pressure after the car has gone through some laps, and they are working with very low pressures in comparison to a road car so a couple of psi either way makes a big percentage difference.

On your road car there's maybe 2psi increase in air pressure on a hard run? Don't believe you would notice any difference in handling switching to nitrogen.

I think it depends on ambient temperatures & abrasiveness of the road surface, but I have seen 4-5 Psi increase in the summer after a hard drive and this wore my Pirelli P Zero Rossos in the centre tread prematurely, despite being inflated at the correct pressure, hence I decided to try the Nitrogen to hopefull preserve my Eagle F1's a bit better.

I have checked it and so far not seen more than 1-2 Psi increase with the Nitrogen after a hard blast...
