Rev Problem on kick down

Noticed tonight on the dual carridgeway in 4th or 5th if i kick down the accelerator the revs jump up about 500rpm and then drop down.


Say im doing 60 in 5th at about 2200rpm and put my foot down it will jump up to about 2900 and then drop to about 2600 or 2700rpm and carry on up.

Power isnt lost just a quirky thing, first thing came to mind is clutch is on its way out.

but im wondering if im just being paranoid as i had the battery off alot at the weekend and this would reset the ecu and maybe this isi a sport thing???

BTW doesnt do it low down only in higher gears :/ and still pulls on power :/

That does sound like clutch slip to me. In a higher gear there is more stress put on the clutch. In fact I always do this test when I'm test driving a second hand car - driving along at 30mph in top gear very gently then accelerate hard to check for slip.

I'm off to a friend of mine who owns a garage this saturday to get an opinion on my clutch - feels like its dying, getting more and more hard work to use.

I'll check what mines like in the above situation, but havent seemed to have had anything similar yet?

if its getting harder its more likely to be a cylinder, mines slipping propper bollocks :(

asked a friend tonight who is a skoda mechanic. but the gf bro is a vw mechanic so gonna go to him for a better diagnosis

True James not good at all.


But had a chat with my gf brother hes a mechanic for VW

he said

if you can pull away in 5th somethings most definatly wrong
if not he said it might be a component that needs adjusting or fixing he dosent wanna take the whole gearbox out to find the clutch still works.

I bought the kit from awesome GTI for £325 delivered.

Am I right in thinking you's have 110 AHF engines?

the kit can be had for £160 though if you get the parts seperatley. I just got it from awesome cause i needed it ASAP.

Yeah we both have 110's. hmm, £160 for parts. Anyone know what a normal flywheel would be? Just out of curiousity.

I know I'm just being lazy, sorry.

A normal dual mass flywheel is about £300+ iirc.

If you can find a ABF engined GTI (mk1 2 or 3 golf i think) then thats a lightened flywheel.

Is there any downsides of going SMF as opposed to DMF?

Dont think the mk1 golf gti engine was ABF, the mk3 one was though I think. Dont know about the mk2.

People say the car rattles and SMF's are alot more 'chattery'

To be honnest, its not that loud, certianly not worth throwing the option away due to a slight bit more rattle.

As for the the ABF, your right, mk3...I knew it wasnt a mk4 so just said them all haha.

Wouldnt make any difference my car has 1500wrms of DLS and Alpines Finest to drown it out lol.

I found a clutch and fly kit on ebay for £160 :/

and GSF has the clutch kit for £114
