Mpg- What are you getting?

I'm looking at getting a Mk 4 Ibiza and are looking at the different engine options. I've read the claims for 47 Mpg in the 1.2 petrol and 43 in the 1.4 petrol, and 56+ in the 1.9tdi.

Are these what people have found using them day to day, my concern is that if i went for a 1.2 with only 69hp, it would need a bit of a heavy foot to keep up with traffic and i'd loose the mpg.

What are people achieving in their cars?

If you want mpg, dont get the 1.2. I can get 47mpg out of it, but its a push and can never manage it over a full tank for a example, as as soon as you have to go abit faster, or stop start, then it drops to 30ish. Ive worked out the MK4 Cupra petrol would get similar mpg on average and you could drive that alot more spirited!

Id go for the 1.9TDi if you want mpg, the PD100 can get 60mpg+ on a run and you drive right :)

my 1.9 130 sport makes on average 45-50 mpg i'd say...i only use it for longish journeys, not really at all during the week, so thats probably higher then people who use them alot round town!

i'm keen on the 1.4 sport (98bhp), and after having a classic mini for 3 years which is not standard by any means and essentially being robbed of money (my own fault LOL), i'd like something a bit more economic.

I'll only be doing about 6000 miles a year and don't think getting a diesel will repay itself, with paying the higher price for the car initially, then fuel, and slightly higher insurance.

Dont think my budget will stretch to a 1.9tdi with lowish miles, so petrol looks my best bet, especially not doing many miles per year.

The smaller petrols will achieve their quoted figures if you work at it, but don't expect to get the figures by just driving 'normally'.

The quoted MPG figures from any manufacturer are all based on a series of pre-defined factory tests and are intended primarily to give a means of comparison between cars. Many people don't appreciate this fact and are of course then angry when their cars don't achieve these figures when driven 'normally'.

My 1.9 TDI 130 (remapped) gets 48-52mpg, Thats with putting my foot down, driving around 30-40mph speed limits. I put £10 in and it get 90-100mpg with mixed driving like i said.

I have a 1.4 100hp(ish) and the best average mpg I achieved is 45.7 over 20miles with a combination of all roads. Takes ALOT of effort to get it that high though. 35-40 is realistic.

i'd be happy with 35-40, my dads civic 1.6 does 39.

I could get a 1.3 corsa diesel, but got my heart set on an ibiza, and may have to take the lower mpg to get the car i want.

Will see.

Surely the 1.3 corsa diesel is a 3-pot? You're best off going for the Ibiza 1.4tdi ... £35/year tax!

I did a check on the 1.4tdi on Parkers and it showed £110.00 for 12 months road tax.

May have been the model i checked, it's needs to be newer than late 05' i believe????

Just done it again and still shows £120.00, so are some people paying £35?

i get around 35mpg outta my Cupra if i drive sensibly lol (which aint that often) the most i have got is 42 and that was on a journey to wales at cruising speed on M6 and M54.

Get a TDI 130, best of both worlds

Still comes down to the economy/ performance thing though, if you want a blend of both its gotta be TDI, but if you aint that fussed for the MPG, get a CUPRA and have a constant smile on ya face lol

You say you can't afford a diesel - have you considered the 1.4tdi? Should be cheaper on tax i believe (£35 a year?) and you'd still get good mpg and they are pokey for what they are! Then there's always the option of a remap ;)

I got 55 average mpg in my PD130 last night going to London. And that was in London rush hour traffic too. Got average 44 on the way home and didnt see double figures much - pretty much triple all the way home (on private roads of course). Derv is the way if you want MPG.

Mine told me I got 62.5Mpg on a short (under 10 mile) route yesterday. I could never get that over a full tank - more like 50ish.

I've looked at the 1.4tdi, but theres only 1 or 2 for sale with the mileage i'm after, and within my budget.
