Temperature going up to 130 degrees!

Hi people
first time I have posted on here, first post is a problem lol!

the mrs has just got a tdi sport 130, great car but has just developed a problem.

Soon as we got it it was taken in for a good service, its just on 52k miles so had the usual filters changed, oil, coolent etc.

Has been running perfect and sitting around 90 degree or just higher once warm but today the temp shot up to 130 degrees.

Had to go out to her at the local supermarket, cars running fine, coolents at the right level etc. all seems fine apart from the high temp.

Strange thing is when turning the ignition off the gauge is only dropping to 90 degrees.

there isnt any warning lights on and the heaters are blowing hot etc, cant hear the fan cutting in or anything. So wondering if its a dicky gauge. But as you can imagine its a tad worrying showing that temp!

Anyone else had the same problem? scared the engines gonna overheat!

Any help would be much appreciated, have done a search but can't seem to find anything relevant to this.

cheers peeps :)

My car runnin temp is 76c.

I'd say 90 is a tad too high. 80 for short periods, atleast?

(I don't have the same car, but in my view 90 or just over is too high. 130 is a no brainer. It could be faulty gauge)

ah ****, thought it seemed a bit high. worried it might be water pump. is there a digital temp gauge too? only been watching the normal gauge tbh.

Not entirely sure. Someone will be a long shortly with good technical knowledge of this model, though I would be worried if it was hovering 90~. Esp as it went to 130. I'd try and not drive it too much/hard until you know for certain.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

90 is fine, but its going up to 130! just been searching about, wondering if its the plastic water pump impellors that are broke, its on 52k so dont think it has had a cambelt yet. might be time to do one now along with a new water pump maybe?

I'd deffo advise water pump and full cambelt kit now. SO would everyone else. Make sure you get a Metal Impellar for your water pump.

If that fails your screwed!

well was aiming to get it done before 60k anyway, so might be a tad sooner lol.

not an expensive job is it? id do it myself but would rather get a receipt for the work, cant be hard compared with my clio williams and evo mind lol.

Possibly a £350 job in a fair dealer?

Could get it for less than £300 for an indy?

The whole lot though.

ah, i get a good rate at the garage i go to anyway. £22 an hour they charge, so as long as the kits not much it shouldnt be too bad.

:( Dunno. But if you wait long enough, there's a few Seat/VW technicians on here who'll point you in the right direction.Overheating engine is bad news.Hopefully,it's just a faulty guage.Funny how it doesn't go back down when the ignitions off.

gonna go out and see what the gauge is at in a few mins. engine should have pretty much cooled now after an hour or so.

just seems strange that the needle wasnt dropping when the ignitions turned off. cant remember if if dropped to zero before, not driven it much myself and you know women never notice stuff lol

engines running fine and doesn't seem unusually hot or anything. heater blowers are nice and hot and when i undo the coolent cap its not under a lot of pressure and the coolants nice and pink with it just being done last week. not dropped either.

did take off the oil cap and was a bit mayonaisy, but noticed this on a lot of cars, usually when not doing long journeys. but if it was the head gasket the coolant shoudlnt look so clean should it.

I agree. I think it's a sure sign that it's a faulty gauge as it should zero once the ignition is turned off. I'd definitly get it checked out ASAP none the less.

Right just been to check it, been stood for an hour and a half and the water temp was still stuck just over 90 degrees.

oil temp was only showing 60 degrees when i started it, so surely the oil temp should be higher than the water temp. heaters were stone cold etc too. but they do get nice and warm once engines warmed up.

as i said engines running fine. just the gauge not dropping lol.

Don't mind if its just the gauge but is a pain not being able to know what temperature its actually running lol

If you any good at DIY repairs, check out my thread above. There's instructions on how to remove the instrument panel, that may help. If you need it replacing the dealer will rip both arms and legs off for the part, you could try "motors in motion", google them. They are VAG group dismantlers, they seem fairly reasonable.
