help with changing thermostat

If this is the sensor in question it's easy to change, I changed it this afternoon and it only took 5 mins - didn't cure the problem so I think it could be the thermostat!

Wilco Motor Parts & Seat main dealer will be able to supply the part although the latter is a tad expensive (£29.75) just make sure that you change the 'o'- ring. you could also try http://www.eurocarparts.com/ as they supply various parts for our cars.

well reading this its process of elimination..
i work for vag and brand new sensors very rearly dodgey from the factory..

now that to me would point to thermostat straight away.. i mean it is minus 1 most mornings so it could just be sticking.. my lcr does similar thing even when hot i can fly down a motorway fully warmed up then when i come to a stop my temp starts dropping coz its stuck open..

Interesting that this thread is on the front page. I'm having pretty similar problems with my LC. My temp guage can sit at 90 then drop to nothing, then hop back up to 90 then drift back to 70ish and I was logging on this morning to ask for advice on which of the following to change first:

coolant temp sensor (old black one to new green one)
temp sender (somewhere near the thermostat)
the thermostat

I've been searching for threads on this for a while and have kinda got the impression that the temp sender is part of the thermostat? Can anyone confirm whether these two things are bought as one part or two seperate parts?

Cheers

Completely separate items located in different positions on the engine. :)

Do you mean that all three are in competely different places?

I know where Black(or green) sensor and thermostat are. Where is the sendor then?

Is it correct that black(or green) sesor feeds engine management and sendor feeds the coolant temp guage?

Cheers

Matt

Just searched the net and the sensor as two sides to it one for the dash and one for the ECU, hence the four prongs/connections in it :)

Mine goes above 90 :(. But when i take off the top hose from the coolant tank i can see coolant is still being pumped through so i really hope water pump is ok. Maybe thermostat is stuck closed. Yes or no ? Possible ? :/. I really hope so !

You will get a little circulation with only a few fins intact on the pump, it's when the car is used harder the temperature increases more and the pump isn't then efficient.

Stat is easy enough to do, and you can then feel inside the block if the pump is intact.

AC is air con.
If you get no warm air from the vents, and they are turned on, on the climate control, the water isn't circulating.
Possible either, but i'm inclined to say pump.
But, you might have cooked the thermostat anyhow, mine was knackered after my pump went so that got changed aswel.
But like i said, you can do the stat and feel inside.
