Cambelt change

My Altea 2.0 TDI Sport is due a cambelt change, 4 years are up but not the mileage 37K.
I have had a quote of £273:-o, buy a local independent garage, this this quote includes the tensioner as well, using genuine Seat parts
Is this a reasonable quote ?
I'm going to phone the Seat dealer i got the Altea from tomorrow for a quote to compare.
Anyone had theirs done? Any advice welcome

Phoned DAVID PENMANS SEAT in Darlington today and they have quoted me £260, for the same job
Just goes to show not all independent service garage's are cheaper than the main dealers.

that's not a bad price for a main dealer to be honest.

my LCR was going to cost me about £500 from a main dealer.... ended up getting JBS to do it for about £350 (inc water pump)

Thanks andyj
Water pump
just been looking through the forum, looks like it's recommended to change this item while it's in bits.
I will phone dealer tomorrow to see what they say

I live in Thirsk, which Indy are you takingit to ? I took my last car to Wakes at Northallerton
But they quoted me more than the main dealer for the cambelt, hence it's going to the main dealer

mine has 37K on clock, it's going in to David Penmans at Darlington this week also getting water pump replaced. I have found on other posts on this site that the pump can fail around 60K or 40K at worst.
All in the cost £329.69

Hi,

I'm taking it to Station Auto services at Carlton Minniott, been taking my cars there for the last 10 years or so.
Good set of lads and never been ripped off hence been going there for years.

The Altea will be having it's 3rd service with them whilst it's there.

My parents live in Sowerby and I live in Bradford so i travel a fair way to get the servicing done but it's worthwhile as I can trust them to do a good job.

Hi,
I actually live in Sowerby (near big school), but i always post Thirsk on forums,
I have never used Station Autos, but i have never heard anything bad. I suppose if your happy with the service of your garage you will keep going back.
I have used wakes at northallerton for a good few years now but is seems their prices are as much as dealers now or more for my cambelt change

Yeah my parents live on Front St.

I bought my car from JCT600 in Yeadon and have had apalling service from them, then used Richard Alexander (now bust) in Huddersfield, all during when the car was in warranty.

There was no way I was paying dealer prices but like you say the price you have been quoted sounds good.

My 40k service at Station auto services was £120 and 50k was £400 but that included 2 new tyres, rear pads and other niggly stuff.

I suppose cambelts are one of those things where you can't be too careful with. Yours has done 23k less than mine and may have ooo's left in it but is just not worth the risk.

There are so many different opinions on this, Station Autos said it was 80k or 4 years and I've read on other forums where it is 60k or 4 years for a visual check and then checks at 20k intervals and a change at 110k, but that's no comfort if a visual check is OK at 60k and it snaps at 65k !!

There was a recommendation of a garage in Wyke (in Bradford) on this board not too long ago. I've not used them but was going to get my cambelt done there soon. I'll have to do a search and find them.

dlm2310 - did you see that thread?

Aftyer expensive experience I would never put a cambelt past 40k or 4 years.. Its a bit of reinforced rubber that is the only thing that stops your engine smashing itself to pieces.
Rubber perishes over time and exposure to all the crap on our roads.

Garage in Wyke could be Westend Autos - Iuse them for my MOTs and trye changes.
Guys that run/own it seem to be honest and hardworking and efficiently run.

40k is a bit excessive mate, I'd be changing mine every 2 and a half years.

Have you just been unlucky ?
