Good day to you all.

Need some info. A friend of mine is looking at buying an Audi A3 1.8T Quattro Sport. I'll be going car hunting with him this weekend and we've seen a couple that have about 60-70K miles on them. I know a lot of you are running the 180bhp unit in your Cupra's, hence posting this here. Can anyone point out some things to look out for, questions to ask the vendor? I've heard about the coil pack issues, but never really looked into it.

Also, has anyone had issues with reliability, be the engine standard, or Revo'd/Jabba'd etc?

Thanks all,

Adam

Engine-wise, not really. My Leon has just hit 60K with no problems. It's been chipped since it had 5K miles on it and apart from a faulty MAF at 15K the engine has been completely trouble-free. It did have a new turbo at 53K but the fault turned out to be a faulty ESP sensor rather than the turbo. Didn't bother me as the car was still under warranty and so I got a new turbo out of the deal.

The only other thing to check on the A3 I think would be to make sure that the Haldex unit has been properly serviced. That is the unit that controls the drive to the rear wheels. It needs a service every 20K I think so make sure it's been done.

Just to add to what has already been stated really...

Mine is a Sept 02 1.8T totallystandard and has just had its 100,000 mile service. Only problem was the coil pack issue that just about everyone has suffered with and they were changed same day under warranty. Engine seems to run sweeter now than ever.....

Thanks for the info. My mate was looking to get the car Revo'd, I'll let him know about the clutch issue.

We saw a 5 door on Saturday, 52 plate, black, 30,000 miles and a years warranty still on it. Vendor wanted £11,800 for it. Not a bad price.

Mines been rock solid. In 4 years and 60,000 miles of very very hard Revo remapped driving (including track days, rolling roads and drag strips) I've had 3 coil packs go, one leaky fuel filter and one MAF fail. I've paid £20 a month for warranty and never used it :(

it would involve being properly strapped over the desk while everyone gets called in to show you the error of your ways.

The only time your car should ever see a dealer is when you a) buy it from them b) return it for warranty work

At all other times you should use a VW Specialist, who will charge you 50% of the labour cost, probably 70% of the parts cost, and do a more thorough job because they won't have 1.12hrs to do 'everything' in

Then they'll check the car over & tell you what needs to be done (depending on it's state) - but I would suggest that at 100k someone will have skipped something - so get a full monty job done on it & then you'll know where you stand from now on.
