I would say the design is defo like that for reducing water ingress.

I rather like the idea of the one piece unit advertised. I have smiliar thoughts as to the purpose ofhte stock intake. If its dumping 50% of the air into the engine bay, it could also be sucking in hot air, could it not? I would also like to check if the air flow increse with a vag if the bottom is partially closed. hole could be left for water to leave. I closed the bottm section with some duct tape a while ago, and the duct tape nealry landed in the intake, as it clearly also sucks in via the bottom slit
