Spraying Interior Handles - Minor Details

Mat

Right then, due to boredom, I ripped off the handles to give them a spray.

Couple of questions.

What grade sand paper do people tend to use? Or like anything, do you work your way from rough to smooth?

Do people spray the bits that surround the door handle?

if yes, what do you do about the markings that are there for the mirror?

Also, what colour do people find best to match the leather cards?

Finally, I need a new mirror switch. Had a small accident. It kinda, er, broke. It was glued in place! A bit strange seeing as none of the others are glued, just clipped.
Is it a dealer only bit? If so, how much? Or does anyone have a spare?

what i did was used thinners to get the rubber coating off which did a simalar effect to nitromorse ie went all crinkley, them i went for a mid wet n dry down to 1200 wet n dry and used hycoat satin black paint which matches up to the door handle trim:p

hope this helps you out

assume you lacquered afterwards?

did you just spray the main long piece, or did you spray both pieces? The bit that goes around the handle is ok, a few scratches. But was thinking of spraying to match the rest.

How would I go about the markings? Draw/Paint back on? or leave it?

that's what i wondered. Lacquer would make em easier to clean, but would also make em shiny. Want them more matt/dull.

What about the switch and the markings? Anyone got suggestions?

Got an idea for you Mat...if you really bored! to keep the markings for the mirrors use a candle-drop a bit of melted candle wax over the marking and scrape of the excess so its just covering the marking and when you finished just pick it off and hey presto! :)

cracking idea.

Myki: i am gonna try super glue. been looking on ebay. Don't think that the mk4 ones are right. noticed that they have the markings on the switch. Where as ours, the switch pops through another plastic piece

no i didnt lacquer it also i only painted the long piece,as the piece that goes around the handle has only a few minor scratches like i say hycote satin black matches so if you want you could always just paint the long pieces

Don't worry about the switch after you glue it either. Because honestly how often do you use it? I used it once when I bought the car to set it right for me and never touched it again.

that's what i'm thinking. Glues back in place, and it twists left to right fine. Just moving in all directions, and "Snap". So re-glued, just remember not to do that again. lol.

So I can now put it back in place looking like normal. Can replace next time I see a cupra breaking (PM'd h17och asking if he has one :D)

Have you thought of replacing the inside door handles with Chrome ones off the 1.4s?
Well, I think its vacuum metalised rather than real chrome but it looks nice! I have to find a new one for the passenger door myself!

Be nice and shiny then Matt, like your intercooler! LOL ;)

I bought my swithc from TPS for £15, so its probably as good to get a new one because as soon as you try and adjust the wirrors, it will break the glue

got a link?

TPS is Telephone Preferance Service :D

what's the link to the site?
