Irish Import?

I rang my local stealer to ask for a price on some brake parts, they told me my car is an Irish Import, so they can't be certain which discs I need.

Eh? I thought SEAT was Spanish?

It's a 1998 S Plate 8v Cupra. I've had the odd troubles in the past - it's got a 16v exhaust on it (factory fitted), plus some other switches on the dash that 8v's don't normally have.

What is an Irish Import?

How do I know what frint brakes my car has, so I can get the right discs?

Dealers can be funny about these things - just phone up GSF or the like and either give them your reg or Engine code

Oh and an irish import is just what it says on the tin - a car brought over here from ireland. Does your reg start BKZ or something similar to that?

Just means the car was first registered in Ireland. Normally just has a slightly different spec but it means that a UK dealer won't be able to get info for that specific car. If you know someone else who has the same car use those details or else just go to euro car parts, or ask the dealer for whatever part no's you need.

I've had the same problems with UK imports in Ireland.

it wasn't registered in Ireland - it was first registered over here.

strange - anyway - anyone tell me how I tell what type of front brakes it has? I'm assuming the discs are the standard 256mm (I know they're vented), how do I tell what kind they are? Dealer mentioned they could be Brembo, but I've read threads about Girling being fitted?? Whats the difference?

dealers are the most useless sometimes.

256mm vented, I bet there's only one type/size being offered, just different manufacturers

buy from GSF or anywhere other than a dealer

nah the disk size and pads infact all parts still should be the same whether its registerd in england or ireland.

rodenal is right phone gsf and ask them for a quote.

That's true but if the car doesn't come up on their computer they will never give you parts incase they give you the wrong ones.

Everytme I've been it's a shortish guy, balding (think he maybe manager)

I once asked for LCR splitter. He asked for Reg of my car, model etc etc. Then said I have an ibiza. I told him I know what I drive, and to just order the part!

Took nearly 15mins to get him to order it! Pleb!

As a guy who's spent the last 10 years working for 4 different manufacturers I can tell you even from my side of the counter it's hard to find anyone who know's what their talking about! If you find someone who is switched on then your lucky..

Manufacturer parts system sometimes won't recognise different country codes. Each country usually has a different code. Helps them when the car is being built as some countries have different regs / laws etc. If the bloke has half a brain he'll know what codes options to look for.. It's really not that hard! Well that is if you've half a brain cell..

Give you an idea, my last job working for Prodrive, I looked after the Irish WRC and Group N subaru's... Also did some work for some of the fast road / track day boys as well... Guess what! The dealer's used to ring me for information because they didn't know!! I'd do their homework for them!!!

It wouldnt be an import if its reg started with three letters

just give them a reg of an identical one lol

probably a guess as it has a private (irish style) plate on it

give him the chassis number and the model and any decent place will know what you have

better still go somewhere that WILL know what you need
