electric seat memory problem

Hi there,

I have recently bought a V reg 2.3 v5. The electric seats are working but the memory function doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?

The battery has probably been disconnected at some point so you then lose memory settings and the ability to make new settings until it is reset. With the ignition off you need to move the drivers seat into the furthest forward position it can go and bring the seat back right forward so the headrest is as close to the steering wheel as you can get it. This should reset the memory function.

Make sure the red memory button is then pressed in, move seats and mirrors to desired position and then press and hold the memory location button until you hear it beep. It's in the manual. Hope you enjoy the car.

Didn't work I'm afraid. Put the seat fully forward then moved the seat back fully forward. This set off the alarm for some reason! Strange. Anyway stopped the alarm with the remote, moved the seat back and tried to store setting but no joy. I was thinking about trying disconnecting the battery. Would I need a code for the stereo if I did this?

No probs. Hmm, strange one. Yes you would need the radio code if you do that. Don't know what else to suggest. So long as the red memory button is definitely in (as it can be hard to tell?). I would go through the procedure again after you disconnect the battery.

Apologies. After doing what you said I tried to store the settings with the ignition still off. Just turned it on and it's let me store them. Cheers for your help!

This post was exceedingly helpful and just resolved my issues with my own memory seats.

However after fixing this the left wing mirror is now behaving oddly.

Although the seat and wing mirrors seem to remember their positions correctly with the mirror selector set to the right mirror when I go into reverse the left mirror actually raises by a small amount. Even more strangely when I come out of reverse it doesn't return to its original position so the mirror 'drifts' skyward each time I go in and out of reverse. The problem doesn't happen with the mirror selector in the centre or left positions.

I've just realised that the left mirror positional memory is entirely broken, the right mirror works correctly. I'm suspecting a wiring issue so may whip the mirror off at some point and see what I find. Unless anyone has any ideas, of course...

To set the reversing mirror angle, select reverse with the ignition on, then adjust the mirror to the desired positon. Next, press and hold a preset on the side of the seat to store the mirror position. Come out of reverse which will cause the mirror to go back to the normal position. To make the mirror dip when you enter reverse, the mirror adjuster switch must be set to "R".

If you can't get your mirror to behave when you select reverse, set the mirror adjuster switch to to center between "L" and "R".

why? cause the left mirror will move when you adjust the right hand mirror. its a feature. Its trying to be helpful.

as above you can store a reverse gear position for the left hand mirror, - a great function when it works, as you can set it to view the curb when reverse parking etc.

Thank you both for your replies but my current belief is that the left mirror position reporting sensor (probably just a potentiometer on a wire ) is broken so when the control unit tries to set the position it runs the motor for a bit thinking the mirror is too low, then when the position doesn't change it gives up.

The electric portion of the mirror is fine but it has no memory function whatsoever. i.e. With the right mirror if I deliberately move the mirror and then request the memory position it returns to the memory position. The left mirror doesn't move at all.

It's far from a disaster, it just means adjusting the left mirror with the joypad instead of relying on the memory. I'd rather it worked, though, so I'll take it apart and see what I see. With any luck it'll be a broken wire that is easily repaired.

Is this a known failure mode of the mirrors? No memory on the left mirror, right mirror is fine?

Went to see a mate with VAGCom last night to diagnose the mirror issues, they're definitely unrelated to the memory seat issue as VAGCom clearly reports that the left mirror position is 0,0. The right mirror position is correct and changes with the mirror movement. My suspicion now, given that the position doesn't work in either direction, is that the left mirror has been replaced with an electric-only part, not the memory-seat-equivalent. Either way this issue is no longer on topic for this thread so if it continues I shall start a new one.
