Oil Burners - how often do you top up your oil?

Had a check of my oil today, used to have a pd130 golf and never had to top up the oil between services but checked my 150 leon FR today and it looks like it needs a little top up, nothing major but going to air on the side of caution. Just wondered how many miles people tend to do before they need to, seems a bit of a diffence between the two cars.

I have a tdi150 with 86000 on the clock and if my oil is right at the very top mark of the dipstick after a service, it will make it to the next service (10000 miles) without a top up, but the oil will be right near the bottom mark. So it uses about a litre over 10000 miles.

From memory I think the oil for these engines is 5w 30 505.1 but check the sticky at the top of the diesel forum.

The diesel engines are not run-in until about 80k+ miles. Before this more oil consumption is not abnormal. I think VW state up to 1L per 1k miles is within spec to start with. The oil is relied on more heavily in a diesel for sealing the pistons etc
