Pondering thoughts and opinions on the Cupra. What will other Cupra owners get next?

For the most part I have been quite chuffed with my Cupra with only the odd minor niggle/fault/design flaw letting it down.

Good things about the Cupra;

Quick

Accelarates well

Stops well

Corners well

Has quite a bit of space

The appearance with the skirts and spoiler and slightly lowered ride height.

The seats

The clock arrangement although I have to say it took a while to realise I was doing 70mph and not 40mph :clown:.

The central rev counter is a great idea too :)

The fact that the full Aero kit is not bolted on as standard :clown:

One of the best things in my opinion are the OEM brakes - they are what stuck in my mind most when I test drove it. Awesome or savage are the words I use and anyone else who drives the car.

I guess what I like most about it however is that it is so underestimated and the drivers of VXR's and ST's just see themselves as so superior or so much quicker when in fact they are not.

Bad things about the Cupra;

Bland appearance as standard - skirts and spoiler should really have been added as standard to distinguish it more from the rest of the range. Better still, a bespoke and pretty kit most people would like should have been added as standard, just as they did on the LCR.

The Centre Part of the dash. What were they thinking? It is a cheap and nasty looking slab of the cheapest plastic with no real effort to make it look pretty, sporty, upmarket or ergonomic. The standard radio is not that great with regard to appearance or sound quality at higher volume either.

For being the top of the range model, it does not come fully loaded with equipment as standard with things like the bluetooth kit which really should be standard on the top of the range Cupra just as Xenons were before they dropped them as standard fit.

Options which are present on other models are not possible on the Cupra such as leather, parking sensors etc. Also the lack of manufacturer approved options like uprated suspension, diff, power upgrades is not handy either.

Traction & grip. Wet days and winter days are not fun with regard to traction/wheelspin. A diff or 4x4 would be handy.

The fact the FR is basically a Cupra with regard to appearance albeit with slightly less power, slightly woolier suspension and slightly less powerful brakes.

SO....

The question is what will those with a Cupra go for next and when?

With the facelift model coming, no doubt complete with a variant of the TSI engine, the value of the original MK2 Leon Cupras (and K1's for that matter) will take a knock although if some of the spy pictures are correct, it is probably not going to be as popular as the original MK2 Leon Cupra due to the chance it will look like the new Ibiza.

I saw a MK6 Golf in the metal last night and it is quite nice albeit quite similar to the MK5, but it is sure to be a winner with its classy interior.

Instant thought for me is the MK6 Golf GTi. Provided it is based on a K04 TSI engine like the S3 I dont think it will be able to do much wrong especially if they fit it with a diff to compete with the Focus RS.

What are others planning to do?

After living with the car for a year now the design faults or flaws are quite annoying. Been thinking a 4wd alot recently probably due to the weather. FQ360 i'd love but the running costs have to be considered.

Evo X or Focus RS look prime contentders. Renault R26R is a bit hardcore if you have family.

I think Mitsubishi were doing 3 year fixed price servicing on the new Evo X, and servicing intervals are now at 10k due to changes to the rear diff / AYC.

Golf 6 or Scirocco cold be interesting if they have decent 272PS lumps in them.

I suppose the other choice is the slightly ugly 135i Beemer

I did look at an Evo X also - You can get an 08 plate Fq360 for mid to high £20k's now.

A diff or 4 wheel drive is really needed to get the best out a turbo charged petrol front drive car with 240bhp especially on a wet or winter day for sure.

I went from a Cupra to a TT TDi

The value has aready taken a hit on the Cupras mate, mine was a late 07 reg MY08 and I got £13550 in part ex in October (deal done in August) and I know that car still hasn't sold. The car was below average mileage.

I wanted better fuel economy than the Cupra as I was filling up 3 to 4 times a week some weeks, but the main reason I changed was the constant stream of issues with the car. Plus the dealer was incompetent.

A good upgrade would be TTS but you are looking a lot more money than a Cupra. The 2.0TFSi TT is actually almost as quick on paper as the Cupra and that's more reasonably priced.

Not got a Cupra but most of the comments about the car apply.

My main gripes are the interior, the centre dash is worst closely followed by the door cards, then by the tiny glove box (they literally meant glove box as thats all you'll get in). Space for me is an issue, the boot could be bigger, maybe should have gone for an Octavia vRS.

Next up will may be 2nd hand at about 2-3 old as much better value:

BMW 330d or 335d/i Touring
Audi S3 Sportback (although would prefer to stay away from VAG for a change)
New Jag XF 3.0d looks nice, 40mpg, 0-60 in 5.9s and beautiful interior.

I'm holding on to mine for 4 or 5 years at least, they have taken such a hit I might as well get my monies worth out of it, I do such low mileage anyway. In the meantime I will just keep putting my extra cash into savings to put toward whatever I choose next.

But I think I'm through with new cars, had 4 brand new SEAT's over the past 10 years and spent around £75 grand when you add it all up. The hit you take to change has become generally unsustainable.

Not sure what i'll get next it's going to be a while off at least, but I've always wanted an Audi, so I'll seriously look at a good used S4, S5 or even RS4.

Limiting factor for me is that the car needs to be 5 door for the company car allowance so the TT would be no good unfortunately. Not sure if the RS will come in 5 door, but I dont fancy one of them anyway to be honest. The GTi is normally always available in 5 door though and the S3 is too :)

Astra, Civic and any other 2 door hatch are therefore out as is any coupe.

I've had the Cupra for just over 6 months (after coming from an RX-8) and think I'll be sticking with it for the forseeable future for the reasons above. Took a huge hit on the RX-8 (23.5K new, PX of 8K 4 years later) so will run it for at least the same number. Happy with the fuel consumption (compared the the RX), the power delivery (althought 4wd / LSD would be nice) and the looks (I LIKE the Aero Kit ).

Part of my wants to do a big turbo or 2.0TFSi conversion in an Ibiza Cupra (R) 2001-2 model as I really miss modifying cars properly. However my sensible side says I should buy a 3yr old Audi S/RS with a V lump in it.

They will be as cheap as chips when warranty runs out on them for sure, but when the downturn ends, expect petrol prices to eclipse the highs we saw last year.

A K04 TFSi in an Ibiza would be ace, especially with a diff fitted :)

I still fancy an Escort RS Cosworth - one of the few depreciation free cars available. Could get that plus an everyday 5 door blandmobile for work that is cheap to buy in the first place so what I would otherwise spend on depreciation could go on things like maintenance and mods for the old girl etc :)

It is a difficult one knowing what to goto from the Cupra, performance wise it is still one of the best hot hatches on the market at the moment.

The need to have 5 doors is a bit of a pain as it rules out quite a few cars.

Would it not be worth waiting a while to see what comes out in the near future?

Aye well I had thought about keeping the Cupra a while longer, but I know that a local dealer is doing good deals on new S3's just now although no doubt I would get robbed with trade in value for mine.

Possibly shooting myself in the foot here, but I don't think the S3 is enough of a step up over the Cupra unless you get a spectacular (and I mean SPECTACULAR) deal on the S3. The dash is nice, and you get the odd envious stare from people who foolishly think that its a prestige car (rather than a rebadged Leon/Golf), but as much as I like it, I think you'd quickly be disappointed if its more a decision around the DRIVE than the BADGE.

All wheel drive would be handy though especially as traction is one of the issues the Cupra has on anything other than a dry road. Not too bothered about the badge, but the nicer interior would be welcome :)

As I do very little mileage now with only working 7 miles away from home. I quite fancy the idea of getting a V6, V8 or V10.

I will however been keeping the Cupra for at least another 4 years in the current climate of the automotive industry.

My short-list of choices at the moment would be:-

Audi S4
Audi RS4
Audi S6
Audi S8

BMW M3
BMW M5

VW R36 Passat

As the above are considerably more expensive to buy than a Cupra, I would buy a 3-year old one and let the 1st owner take the intial hit in value loss.

I've always fancied a 911, although the costs to purchase one will still be greater than that of the above. Practicality is always a problem also having a family to think of.

No harm in going for a test drive and seeing what sort of deal they'll do.

Not sure of the A3/S3 compared to a Leon but the TT is a completely different car to the Leon even if they are the same platform.

I've always wanted a Sierra RS Cosworth 3-Dr. They are still a lot of money and it's harder to get parts for cars over 15 years old as dealers stop doing parts for them.

I'd go with a TT-S or TT-RS (OK in my dreams), but found the TT 2.0T petrol pretty feable. We have no kids or close relatives, so a TT would have been fine, but when we were buying a car in 2007 the TT3.2V6 just felt understeery (and slow), and the TT 2.0TFSi just felt....something and nothing. Can't comment on TDi TT as never driven it. Probably a lot better than the 200PS petrol.
