Rust Around the Wheels!

Hi All, I have a 57 Leon FR TSFI and have noticed rust around both rear wheels (Was like this when I purchased it)

Forgive my ignorance, not exactly sure what its proper name mechanically speaking is, the hub maybe! :headhurt:

You can see from the attached pictures.

Is this common place? Somthing that could be sorted under warrany?

Alternatively, could these areas easily be sprayed, along with the calipers to provide extra protection against corrosion? If so can anyone advise what products to use and correct way of doing?

Cheers

This is a common thing of most car wheel brake hubs. Car manufacturers don't tend to treat the bare castings with any protection, hence the rusting.

You cold always paint them with hammerite or alike. If you were really fussy you could always get them powder coated which will cost a bit.

I haven't had a chance to paint mine and will probably wait until next summer when the weather is nice.

Unfortunately I think your Seat Dealer will not replace these under warranty. Cast Iron Brake Discs will corrode if un-treated.

Thanks all :)

I'll get myself a tin of hamerite. Assume this will be fine for the calipers aswell?

Thinking of using red given the car is black.

I assume it is just a case of rubbing away the excess rust with an abrasive pad and then painting/sparaying 'em up isn't? Or is it more cmplicated than that!

Right, I have had a scan through the lengthy earlier post on this issue so though best to summarise;

1. Basically it seems that SEAT won't fix this under warranty, if you can get them too then you are extremely lucky! Basically they are made of untreated iron and subject to rust. At best your dealer will rub down the excess rust with a wire brush for you..

2. Particularly now with the spoked alloys the rust is more visible, best course of action is to treat them yourself.

3. From recommendations other have used a good ole bit of elbow grease and a wire brush to remove the existing rust (some have used rust removal products aswell)

4. Popular choices for painting the hubs are;
- Hammerite, radiator painr or any that are heat resistent
- Spirex Heat resistent exhaust paint
- Matt Engine Paint
- Also someone has used alloy wheel spray
- Powder coating (bit overkill as expensive but if you inclined why not!)
- regularly spray so WD40 on them if you fortunate enough not to have rusty hubs already and as a conditioner / preventer

Since my motor is a black FR with flashes or red (aminly about the FR logo) I think ill paint mine red along with the calipers.

I'll post some piccies but probably not going to do this until the weather improves and have a bit more time.

Good luck to others who have same problem
