Is the EGR not something to do with the "anti shudder valve" ? dont you worry about it not being there ?
"Anti shudder valve" cuts air off from engine at turn off to stop the engine from "shuddering" it is also used as an emergency shut down for the engine.
Thats my understanding of it anyway ? May well be wrong though :D

Dan that is true but I know Chris has said the shudder is minial now he has no ASV and there are also several posts around that say that it really does help very little on the emergency shut down side of things.

It is possible to shut off the EGR completely but leave the valve in place - I can get away with just removing the electrical connector to the N18 valve, but in PD cars that seems to set off the Engine Management light. You can replace the gasket with a sheet-metal plate to stop the exhaust gas getting to the inlet - again PD cars need a little hole in this plate.

Chris has replaced the section of pipe with the EGR valve and the Anti-Shudder valve with a straight-through section. This is a bit more drastic.

My 2nd question would be:-

If my engine did start to run away could I just crush the intercooler pipe shut as I have silicon hoses? Same affect as a ASV?

Not that i'm worried about it lol

Chris:
In theory i think you could yes, it just chokes the engine i think to stop it runing.
The thing is, what if your in your car and something goes wrong? engine cant shut itself down so causing mmore damage?
All maybes ofcourse and i dont know alot about this particular system to be honest.

Surely it would stall, and my point is, would it stall the same as a car with ASV still in place ? probably not, i reckon the ECU or whatever would close the ASV to make it stall without damage or excesive shuddering ?

I've seen a diesel lump suck up its own oil out of the intercooler and over-rev, driver put it into final gear and tried to stall the engine but it was producing so much torque that the brakes and 5th couldnt slow it down and the clutch started to slip.

He had to stop the vehicle so pressed the clutch in, at which point the engine revved off the scale, went bang, snapped some rods, threw some out the side of the block and made a bit of a mess..

The ASV valve never moved. I'm not sure what he did with the key though, i suppose if your engine is running away the first reaction would be to turn the ignition off which should have closed the ASV, unless by that time it'd already filled the inlet with oil.

Either way, it was a standard car, with fully functioning ASV that blew the block to bits...

Thanks for the inside info Jabba :)
Did the ASV not move due to malfunction or is that the way they are designed i.e closes only when ignition is turned off therefore providing no protection to engine during a problem.
Thanks
Dan

I'm not completely sure, it definately wasnt malfunction. I'm not entirely sure how the managements protocols define the engine running away.

I suppose it'd look at injection quantity vs engine torque.

There's no real way to test it though unless you'd like to fill your intercooler with oil and then run it :)

Ok then, thanks again for the info jabba.
If you had a car with an ASV and you were moding it for performance would you remove the EGR and ASV completely or just turn EGR down via VAGCOM ?
Or would that depend how far you were going with the vehicle overall ?

my defender sumtimes runs away when no derv left , if u turn off ignition its still chuggs away , so ive put into top gear and stalled , and id imagine theres a fair bit of torque on them 2.5 tdis, i can pull of with my jet ski in 2/3rd or low ratio in 4th

It's completely down to personal preference, some people prefer to remove the internal restrictions within the valve unit itself.

Turning the egr down in vag com will still let some exhaust gas pass, vag com still doesnt turn it off.

Now try stall it whilst you've got your foot down on the throttle lol.

Remember, if an engine takes in a lot of oil and runs on it, it'd probably make more torque than the engine was ever designed for, hence snapped rods thrown through the block.
