Before anyone says it, yes ive searched and havent found a single thread with similar symptoms!

So problem = When at a standstill and in neutral, if i put the clutch all the way in there is an odd scrapping/grinding sound which i can only assume is coming from the gearbox.

The noise doesnt happen unless the pedal is literally on the floor/carpet. If i press the clutch halfway in then pause for a second and put it all the way in again no noise.

The noise doesnt change if a gear is selected and the clutch held in either. As soon as i move off the noise goes away.

Revs dont affect the tempo/rythm of the noise.

Oh and when this happens there is a sort of feedback through the clutch pedal which is roughly the same tempo/rythm as the mystery noise:shrug:

Although not very loud, it sounds truely rank and as a result im tempted to leave the car at home, on my driveway until i can get a new clutch/flywheel setup and get it changed :(

Im absolutely stumped as to what it could be so before i go forking out for a G60/VR conversion i was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

Cheers in advance guys :)

Right just been out in the car and it seems that after a roast through a couple of gears (6k rpm) the noise/pedal feedback starts. Once a gear is selected the noise continues until the clutch pedal is halfway up then it stops.

A thought i had is it might be low on gearbox oil?

But I cant figure out how it would be as theres never been any signs of a leak

Bump

Anyone got any ideas?

Ive had a friend suggest clutch release bearing as they tend to make a whirring noise when the clutch is in

Hmm never heard of that before

A friend who is a senior tech at VW (and specialises in gearbox/clutch issues) has now heard it and says hes 95% sure its the release bearing as if it was anything to do with the box id hear it when the clutch was out not in. It only makes any noise when the box is hot/up to temp and when the pedal is literally touching the carpet, any higher and not a peep.

Ive got him to order up a G60 Flywheel and VR6 Clutch now anyway so going to go ahead and replace those and if it does turn out to be more serious ill just have to corss that bridge when i get to it :(

The cars never been abused at any stage in its life and its just gone 80k now so id be alarmed if it did turn out to be the lay gear

I was under the impression unless seriously mistreated the gearboxs in these things were bullet proof (well until mega miles anyway?!)

Edit:

After a quick search i dont understand how it could be a lay gear thats causing the noise as that is a toothed gear. Unless the whole thing was stripped bar 1 or 2 teeth it couldnt make the noise im hearing (at least i wouldnt have thought so).

And surely if it was something as serious as that id have some issues selecting gears when in fact other than the slight feedback though the pedal and the annoying noise theres been no other issues!

i cant remember weather mine was with clutch dipped or raised but it was deff the box im 1st gear had a strange noise also no problems selectin gears up to you but as you got to take box out to do clutch etc why dont you get your box serviced just to check it? it was a VW master tech who told me it was the box he explained why it was not the release bearing hopefully for you your mate is right let me know how it goes

Im not having any issues selecting gears and the clutch has now started slipping pretty badly so im going to go with his prognosis:)

Funnily enough a friend with an ek9 CTR says he thinks his bearing is going as it whirrs when the clutch pedal is up/out which is the exact opposite of what i was experiencing:headhurt:

Im going to bet its more clutch related than box related(id hope anyway!) as i cant think why i would have clutch slip but not have selection issues if it was something wrong with the box, if that last sentence makes sense:confused:

New fly/clutch tomorrow so will find out tomorrow night if its more serious

G60 Flywheel and VR clutch are now on and my god what a difference!!!

It was the release bearing that was shagged, got the old setup in the boot and will have a look once it stops chucking it down outside.

Clutch is light as a feather and it picks up the revs so much faster :D

Just need to run it in now and replace the brake pads and itll be like a new car again!

Happy days :funk:
