Engine Compression down on one cylinder

My Arosa 1.0 (2002) with 19,200 miles has just been diagnosed with compression down in cylinder 1. Inspection shows I require a valve change because of a build up of carbon dioxide. The Seat dealer says the car is too old for any warranty help and they want £600 to make the repair. Can anybody suggest what I should do? They want £150 just for the diagnosis and are now asking me if they should go ahead and fix. Is this fault not because of faulty materials when making the engine? Should not Seat pay for this? Any advice gratefully received thank you.

if it's due to carbon build up it's from little use and short journeys so doubtful you would ever get it warranty

ideally a head off strip down and decoke is the ultimate solution but for what it's worth look at trying a fuel/oil treatment like redex ?

used to work well on older motors, not ideal as a top end strip down but cheaper

if inevitably you do need head surgery try looking for a local specialist/reccomended independent as it's a job most garages would be able to accomodate

i assume its an exhaust valve? which cylinder as a matter of interest and what are the symptoms? Its quite a labour intensive job to re-seat a valve plus you will need a new cambelt, headgasket and other consumables so i'm not surprised they quoted you 600 quid. try the redex though i've had good results with that in the past. best of luck

Symptoms are engine judder but does not happen all the time

One further question.

Having never used Redex and not yet been to Halfords to look on the bottle. How strong can I go with quantity of Redex solution in the fuel? Is a whole container too much in say half a tank of fuel? Or should I drip feed and mix only with a full tank?

Dont go overboard with the redex. It worked for me when my 2000 sport arosa was running a bit queer but a few weeks later the fuel pump blew up and the AA said it was probably the cause.

It did the trick tho, just cost me for the fuel pump too!

WHOOPS!

Again, short journeys cause coke build up on yer valves, hope you've kept up regular oil changes as the hydraulic valve lifters can stick and cause yer "shudder".
