I've noticed a big drop in MPG when the outside temperatures are low too - I've always attributed it to the engine taking longer to reach normal operating temperature

Yes i have noticed this too. I drive roughly 45 miles to work mainly down the motorway, each day and it cold weather notice a drop of around 3mph.

I also thing that the published fuel consumption figures are based on tests that are utterly meaningless.

When I brought this car I was looking forward to getting over 50mph based on the published fuel consumption figures.

It appears that VW have managed to produce a replacement for their 1.9 diesel engine that is actually less efficient! I could cuise down the motorway all day in the fast lane and still get over 48 mph in my Bora TDI 130.

Well , i have a courtesy car 1.9 tdi leon , 58 plate with 1,200 miles on the clock and the fuel consumption is shocking , i have had it 2 weeks and done 300 miles ish and put in £40 thats on par with my Cupra

Plus the fact that diesel is more expensive than petrol is pretty crap.

i queried it with the dealeer who informed me that if you do short journeys in a diesel it will use more fuel , which doesnt make sense cause im doing the same journey i would in my Cupra lol.

Cant wait to give it back tbh , costing me a fortune.

I've only been doing short journeys in my TT TDi last week or so and the mpg has dropped massively. Probably getting 4 or 5 mpg more than the Cupra in local driving which sounds like the sort of trips you might be doing. Its only on the open road that you see the economy benefits of a diesel.
