Exhausts and plugs

Help wanted - especially from DanGB :p

Dan has mentioned that whilst replacing the stock exhaust on his 2.0 TFSi Sport he noticed a short restricted section that he thought would impact standard performance.

Elsewhere I've heard mention that replacing the spark plugs with more 'performant' ones helps push out a little more power - particularly on chipped cars.

So, having looked at the price of Milltek exhausts, it is clear I can't afford one. Are there any more budget-orientated ranges of exhaust for the Leon that would still make a difference? Dan, which bit of the exhaust was the restriction in? What should I be looking for?

Regarding the spark plugs - any comments on whether this is worthwhile or just a waste of cash?

My car is 2.5 years old and has still got all its original bits, so I'm assuming the exhaust is about done anyway.

Just before the exhaust goes into the main back box, it goes really small. (coming from the engine side)

Not really sure about plugs, dobt really think it makes much of a difference really. dont think its worth changing them until they need replacing, then might be worth 'upgrading'.


Piper do cheaper exhausts, otherwise possibly get an exhaust from a cupra, although im not sure how much different they are to the FR system.

The exhausts come in two parts. catback (rar half) nd downpipe/cat (front half) Only need the catback section unless you want alot more performance and stage 2 tuning.

Might not do any harm to get a custom exhaust to be honest. The route from the cat back is pretty straight forward.

The route the Milltek takes at the back box is baffling (no pun intended) although I am sure that is so that the system does not drone. The likes of the APR back box seems to use a much more direct route and a smaller silencer although Z Boyd will tell you it is also a bit louder than the Milltek (not heard it myself so wouldnt know).

If you can pick up a second hand uprated downpipe from a 2.0T Golf, Leon or A3, it will fit on your car. The cat back part could probably be made for 250 notes.

Failing that, keep an eye on the classifieds for a bargain - they do come now and again. Ben CTR got his entire system for an absolute steal second hand.

I noticed a decat pipe by a company called xspower, was about £180 on ebay, then get a centre section from someone like supersprint and then whatever back box you want? I worked this out as being the cheapest way... You could have someone like blueflame in skelmersdale build you one? you'd be suprised how cheap a custom one could cost! Or powerflow is another company. For the cheapest (but crude) is take to your llocal exhaust fitter get them to cut out your cats and weld a straight pipe section...plenty of options!

Okay so if I spend about £300 on a specialist "cat back" including VAT and fitting what can I expect in terms of improvement?
