Mine too, asked almost the same question last week, nobody knew, well nobody answered.
Mines been reading between -3 and -10!!
My mechanic says they are under the front bumper and are always getting knocked and giving erratic readings. He said they are just for the ice warning/temp display and arent connected to the ECU.
Hope he's right!

Edit: just doing some fishing on the net, and apparently its in the nearside mirror! But also apparently prone to going haywire.

yes mine can read as low as -22 lol, i wounder how much a new one is?

LMAO!!! -22! 'Its a new lap record'

Well, in my 'auto trader review of the MK3' thread, Fl@pper says the sensor is about £20, and doing a bit more fishing I read you can cut the wires and solder it on (rather than trace it back and go to all the hassle of plugging the new one in).

Yup, be generous with the wire just in case you need to re-do this joining there is plenty space to stash the extra wire, plus remember that the display will not immediately correct itself - give it a couple of days of driving to allow it to display the current temperature before you start trying to re-do the wiring again!
