Hi guys, i was just coming back from work in the rain tonight going about 35-40mph and this bloody nissan infront of me decides to suddenly emergency brake for the zebra crossing, anyway i emergency braked and my brakes decide to lock up and i was literally 1cm away from him. i thought i was gunna crash into him tbh  it **** me up to be fair

anyway my question is, is it possible to add ABS to a MK4? im not very technical when it comes to cars so be nice :p

Lucky you, yours pulled you up in time -_-

Front bumper got knackered this morning, some twat in a Passat decided to emergency brake when he saw the light turn YELLOW. Was following at a good distance, but the road was slippery and car couldn't quite stop in time.

Ah well, finally an excuse to fork out to have the facelift bumper sprayed and fitted.

It wouldn't have been so bad, just the car took all the hit on the central grille piece, rammed it back, spread the "hole" its in, made the two side grille bits pop out :p

The Passat had the worlds lightest scratch, was ridiculous. At least emergency braking for a crossing could be justified if someone ran out or something. DW anyway, parents wanted a christmas idea ;)

Kwik Fit have got a good deal on their brake checks at the moment - have one done, and your car is entitled to free pads and shoes for as long as you own it.

Afriad not. Not all MK4 came with ABS as standard.

Early 02 plate 1.2 S models didnt...

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/seat/ibiza-2002.aspx?page=7 <--- See here.

On a side note, no idea what the 1.2 chill is ;) Never heard of it.

Im afriad, ive not answered your question, but hopefully you can see if you did slide, or simply dont have ABS.

I simply don't have it then, mines one of the very few 1.2 S around, 02 plated as well. Explains a lot, no rumble in the pedal on harsh braking.

Thanks for the info T.Spark. Depsite it's foibles, I'm a big fan of my car - I'm thinking when I buy my next car, it'll be a five door with a bigger engine. That's a while off...like when I get a full time place somewhere.

it's possible that you do have ABS, but the brakes were so ineffective that they didn't lock up

you can stop a car quicker with out ABS then one with if you know what your doing;)

not trying to sound old or anything but maybe you were a little to close to him to start with? maybe give a extra gap as the roads are really greasy and slippy atm

all too common a statement unfortunately and you wouldn't believe how many people experience it for the first time and actualy let their foot OFF the pedal :headhurt:

first thing i made my old man do when he got his first abs car was to take him round the trading estate quiet and show him the difference and what it does and to keep pushing against it etc

30mph brake test we did he was 1/2 the distance when we finished

hmmm thats interesting, makes me wonder if i do have ABS 'cos it did take longer to stop than usual, even in the rain/drizzle

to be honest im usually quite generous witth gaps unless somebody cuts me up, ive got into the habit of a 2 second gap as i did with him, he must of been doing about 40ish when he emerengcy stopped so i spose that didnt help much

No, it doesnt. I used to own a 04 plate 1.2 SX and that did have, however, back in the day Mike @ JBS used to also own a 1.2 on a 04 plate. He didnt have ABS from memory, which is how I know not all 1.2's did :)

I know this doesnt answer your question but atleast you know now one way or another.
