Hello

The ESP light next to my petrol cap light is on. I thought if I pressed it it would turn off but it stays on. In my manuel it states that if the light is on it is disconnected. Is it normal that is stays on when I press the button. I have recently bought the car and I am worried the ESP is broken.

I have read that this could be relating to a MAF problem? Ie the traction control is disabled because the mass airflow meter doesnt work. Theres plenty of topics out there on this.. Search :)

Are you talking about the light in the switch itself? this is always on so that you can find the switch if you need to. The light the tells you if the esp is on or not in between the dials in the dash, press the esp button and you will see the light I mean, just press it again and the light will go out, indicating your esp is functional again.

ive come across this problem a number of times it could be down to a num of faults poss faulty abs sensor or abs control unit or poss air leak before the maf sensor poss split pipe it worth having a look especially if its a 1.8 20v? common fault under top engine cover the breather pipe splits causing the light to appear on the dash

As above, there should be an orange light illuminated on your speedo guage cluster only when the ESP is disengaged. If this light stays on even when you've pressed the button by your handbrake, it would indicate either that the ESP is no longer functioning or alternately an electrical fault is causing it to stay on regardless of it working or not, this I can't advise you on but you'll soon know by how easliy you can spin up the front wheels in the wet...try giving that a go.

If its a fault before the MAF then i dont know why youd be looking under teh engine cover. And if the breather pipe splits, doesnt that put the engine management light on and not the ESP light? Or am i being really thick?

it does sometimes put the engine light on but i had one before that put the esp light on and i couldnt understand how a split pipe would do this but after i changed the pipe the light went out very strange:shrug:

The split pipe under the engine cover isn't 'before' the MAF sensor. THe only thing that's before the MAF sensor is the air filter.

you need to say what vag com says. im sure it says more than 'electrical fault' is there a fault code?

failed maf is a potential cause. But let us know the fault code before you start spending money as there are other potential causes.
