I'd swap for a 2.0T if I were you...

Big Turbo is seductive, we all want to do it but it doesn't make financial sense to sink the money into a car that's not worth it in the end.

If you were a tinkerer/tuner/were doing a lot yourself, fine - I can see the point. But bearing in mind your level of knowledge and the fact that you're going for a turn-key solution, it makes more sense to me to sell yours and get a mk2 :shrug:

As said mk2, hpfp, intake and remap alone should see you 330hp+. TBE and poss more bhp.

we could all buy bigger, newer and faster cars as standard, but we are missing the point here, thats not what this is about, as echoed through this forum constantly:)

it's about a car's individuality, tuning potential and having something very rapid and slightly stealth almost

sure I could buy a newer car and tune that, but then I would just be doing all the same again, handling, FMIC, etc etc

since I already have this in place, then its just the BT conversion I now need. No it does not make financial sense, but then I wouldn't be a petrol head if I was concerned about not getting my money back from tuning....cos that aint never gunna happen and we all know that:)

jamie, i saw you down bills the other sunday! i was droping my A3 off for new engine build!!

you've decided to go bigger then? good luck with it!
2871 in bills octavia was impressive, very strong pull to it, for such a big car.

should have the gt30 up and running on my A3 by feb i would of thought

well it was slow to start, by 3k rpm it was starting to get going, approaching 4k rpm, it wanted to go wild. had to back off tho, as it wasnt mapped. my bro followed me home after i had roll cage fitted, evan while running in, he said it was quick.
keep revs up and i think it would have been great!

edit:: was about 500rpm slower to get going than ihi

says it is designed more for 2ltr and upwards?

what concerns me with that is too bigger turbo for our 1.8cc and will be very laggy (due to the 1.8cc not simply having a large enough volume to get that turbo to spool up quickly enough as it should do), and by the time it starts to spool, it will be time to change gears

LAG LAG LAG, BOOST, change gear, LAG LAG.........

why not stick with a tried and tested gt28 or gt30 which will do the job more easily for what you want

Hi mate,

The gt2871R will make 400bhp with the hotside being the restiction hence why you put the gt30 housing on and it makes 450!

as a comparison, the gt3071 i removed from the octavia recently had 0.86 a/r, larger turbine & compressor... laggy as you like. 5500rpm before full boost

GT2871 on there on 0.63 and its pulling nice from mid 3krpm
the turbine on the gt2871 to the IHI's is bigger hence more flow, more top end.

what would you recommend Bill, gt28 or gt30 for around the 400bhp mark comfortably?

hey you know what works on a 1.8t!
The gt2871 and gt3071r has the same size compressor wheel mate,there are a few varients that run slightly larger inducers but in there but nearly all the same.God knows what was on the octy? obviously not a 3071??
Try a gt3071R with .64 exhaust housing that may help.The Turbine wheel is bigger but thats what allows the flow to 450bhp.

Just for reference, I had my TD05h-18G apart and measured everything. Specs are similar to a gt2781r with lower a/r for those going the IHI flange route.

Compressor wheel: Inducer = 1.992" (50.6mm)
Exducer = 2.68" (68.1mm)
Trim = 55
Flow = 40lb/min (max?) (585cfm @ 15psi)

Turbine Wheel: Inducer = 2.20" (55.8mm)
Exducer = 1.93" (49.1mm)
Trim = 77
A/R = 0.50

I know, I'm useless. Been in the middle east for work and now at home after an operation. These are my excuses :)

Might be selling up due to a permanent job abroad. Buy something fast in my new location. A mate works for Sultan of Oman. The guy just hands out supercars for good work!!! :-0

ok,had to quickly knock this up,it's a 2L Gt3071R with cams etc i think it was a .82 ex housing 2 bar held(blue) vs the same set-up but with a TD05H 16G6 which has larger compressor housing,1.9bar peak to 1.6bar redline.(red)
power is at the wheels but it's just so you can compare spool/power/torque

thanks, thats very interesting, certianly the TD05H is spooling quicker and holds bhp just as well, all be it a little lower
