Heres the pic of Sams old backdraft kit, so cleary is Backdraft downpipe, but ceramic coated.... But surely thats a bad thing to get it ceramic coated, or any other part, it isnt recomended by Garrett at all is it.:rolleyes:

ceramic coating is a good idea, where it keeps heat inside, and reduces the rapid heat expansion, cooling contraction, which causes stress fatigue cracking.

it wont have anything to do with nuts & bolts coming loose tho

;)

Hello Bill,

I was awaiting your reply, because i know you are a true engineer and know your stuff inside out with cars, so thanks for pointing that out bud.

I posted that sarcastic comment because of a different arguement i had with another tuner (you can guess who) they mentioned that them selfs and Garrett "allegedly" dont recomend this race proven mod!

ever thought about doing the inlet mani Bill?

No.. not considered it as neccessary. Mine runs cool to touch with water/meth running, is on the induction side and does not suffer heat stroke like everything else on the hot side of the motor.

radiated heat is massive ont he exhaust side on 1.8t's and is also starved of cooling air.. muchos hot.. melty things.. as well as the benefits I mentioned earlier on the rapid heat cool, expand/contract side of things, where fatigue can set in and failures thereafter.

I used it as I was recommended to use it by Primary Designs, and recommended to use Zircotec Zirconium flame sprayed coating.. its not cheap when compared to camcoat and the like, but its amuch thicker coating ans stays stuck in the long term from race cars I race with over several seasons. Good enough for me. Strongly advised for all those reasons.

Hmmmmmmmm

Alex you know Mark is a fireman not an engineer !

Dear Sam,

You are absolutely right! After spending nearly 17 years in the fire service working through the ranks, dealing with small and large fires, IRA bombs, more traffic accidents and fatal incidents, train crashes, suicides etc etc than I really want to recall, working as a team and later leading many teams and whole stations. You are right I was a firefighter and extremely proud of that.
After building and racing cars and bikes over the last 12 years and after no longer enjoying travelling on the underground through Kings Cross (my last job in London) I decided to follow my dream and start my own motorsport company.
I was actually encouraged to start by the managing director of the largest UK independant turbo importer and distributor to build the 1.8T turbo kit. I have been to motorsport college myself, but to be fair I use my resources to the best I can. I run Backdraft Motorsport as a team and prefer to be part of that team. I take advice from qualified people and then test the theories in extreme conditions. I have a great crew to thank and support from some really great technical guys and girls.
So when you took our turbo kit, modified the downpipe with ceramic coating, had the kit fitted in a workshop where the person who took the kit off your car then left and someone else then fitted it incorrectly, then took the car to be mapped, with different injectors by a company we no longer use- you were surprised when you bought the turbo to us bright orange inside where the turbo had overheated, the exhaust wheel was rubbing on the exhaust housing where the housing had distorted, dents in the compressor wheel where something had been sucked in. However I wasnt surprised.
You then sold the kit onto another forum member who is now trying to sell it as a Backdraft Kit. I have offered to help sort the kit out so that someone else isnt landed with your problem in our name. But I have been hurled abuse by that forum member. So if anyone wants a turbo kit with bits of Backdraft, Sam and others designs I'm sure the advert is around somewhere.
I am a tough cookie and can take the abuse, but I am very passionate about these kits as we have sold 100+ 1.8T kits now and still a few people still seem intent on slating them.
The people on this forum are very wise so I dont think its really causing too much of a problem for us, its just getting boring now.
If you really think spending 17 years in the fire service is a negative thing then you really are getting desperate.
On a forum note, lots of the posts about this on the TT Forum were deleted. But I would like to state that Backdraft Motorsport will stand up to these words where ever they end up going.

On another note to Bill. We have looked at ceramic coating and can see the benefits entirely. At this stage we have only gone on the recomendations from Garrett and it seems more critically the Catalytic convertor manufacturer. It seems that the risk is sending too much heat down to the cat and destroying it. With the race cars it hasnt been a problem up until the introduction of the cats in race cars next year. I would like to try it on some development kits. Can you recomend anyone reliable? If we can make it work we may introduce it into our kits but only when we are fully satisfied. TBH with the problems Sam had with his turbo overheating I'm a bit concerned this contributed to his problems. What do you think. Feel free to PM or share I dont mind.

Woops

Forgot to say- You have my permission to bring back the picture. The guys here really took the P155 and they want a copy to go on the wall.

hi mark.
http://www.zircotec.com/page/exhaust-system-coatings/60

This is who I use. Very good durable coatings and turnround for me has been less than a week.
We run metal matrix cats, as do 1.8T's so coping with heat does not seem an issue. Keeping under bonnet temps down etc is superb. I have had my tubular manifolds and downpipe done as far as the flexi. Exhaust housings etc I have not done. I am running a heat jacket on the GT35R I am running now tho to keep it cosy (and other things from melting). EGT's thus far on dyno peaked at 730'c so alls good so far.
I suspect the overheating you describe and "red" colouration is V-Power combined with 900+'C EGT's and 12 or 13:1 afr's. My IHI's would go this way and were run both too high on egt's and too high on boost. melty housings as a consequence.
Since changing to my own setup, CC3 last couple of years, water/meth injection and a shed load of unisettings tweaking, my reliability has been excellent considering the abuse its received. No more housing distortion problems, no manifold problems. I now have dumped me7 ecu and converted to dbw prototype DTA standalone and about to install another 4 injectors to keep up with fuel demands. Standalone is leaps and bounds more flexible than trying to make an me7 do something it was never designed for.
Cats for race use will be interesting for us I think. How anyone can check its actually a functioning cat @ the circuits is not even known by the officials. - lol

regards
bill

Thanks Bill for the info.

With the latest Revo software we dont suffer at all with EGT's on our kits and reliability has been awesome. After doing the Britcar 24 hour we had no problems at all with the kit on the race car either. Just got let down by the stupid coil packs!
Our exhaust manifolds are high Nickel cast units so ceramic coating isnt an option. At the moment we heat wrap about 10" of the downpipe so I may see if it is an option just to ceramic coat part of the downpipe.
We only like to run EGT's into the 600's for our customers cars so this may be a pointless exercise but its good to explore different options.
Thanks for the info Bill:)

Best Regards,

Mark

I think he is meaning more like 800 degs bill. I see 650 when just cruising at 80mph. lol!

That's the real reason why you quit the fire service isn't it Mark you kept getting the temps wrong!!!! LOL ;)

btw - I will call when back from NY to book a date in Jan for that decat.
