Gearbox oil leak

My Gearbox has a major leak, i could smell oil at the weekend which then developed to a noisy gearbox, i have jacked the car up today and refilled the box, run the car in 1st gear then had a look underneath the oil was gushing out from between the bottom of the sump and the gearbox? I had the box reconditioned and pelequin diff fitted last year and it has been fine until now.

mine was leaking from a slightly different place to yours.it was from the metal spacer between the gearbox and engine which turned out to be the rear main engine oil seal.i get it booked in asap mate.

input shaft seal on box if its g'box (smelly) hypoid pouring out. (or worst case, a hole in the diff the bell housing if a peloquin bolt has worked its way out. - hope not, and unusual, but not unknown)

Does it smell of eggs? Are you running 5spd or 6spd? Ive had both the seal go and a snapped bolt go through the casing on the 5spd box i run. If its lots of oil gushing out then i would say its a snapped bolt. Is there a snail trail where you have driven?

Yeah its defiantly gearbox oil, horrible stench, didn't notice any oil leaking when the car was standing, i only knew there was a problem when the gear box started whining quite loud and then i see there was some oil around the top of the box. filled the box up with oil then jacked the front of the car up and put it in gear and it came out the bottom just as quick as i put it in

be very careful mate. i had a leak coming from the drainage plug which went unoticed until the box was very noisey. i managed to get it sorted but not before i'd terminally damaged the internals.......... which later decided to go bang. i got hold of a second hand box and it was all sorted, even after finding out i had a leaky seal where the shortshifter attaches at the top.

one thing i learned after all that...................... i hate the smell of gearbox oil!

Sound like a bolts gone. Careful drivng it as your gearbox will work without oil but when it gets too hot will seize and then you wont even be able to push the car anywhere as the wheels wont turn.

or the internals will get brittle and disintergrate . i'd seriously get it looked at before it becomes expensive!

Time to get the box out me thinks. If its the bolts then its because they wernt torqued up properly or the final drive gear isnt perfectly flat. Usually from small build ups of rust. Peloquins will usually send out a free replacement set of bolts, but you do have to pay the massive postage charge.

I would think if the oil is pouring out, then you have a hole :-(

Here's one I prepared earlier albeit an 020 from my old golf. Does the clutch still work? Mine slipped badly and was almost undrivable.

Cheers guys its not looking good is it, the car still drives fine i can select all gears the only thing i did notice is the clutch seemed to bite fairly late compared to normal, i wont be driving it any where now until its sorted.

My mk2 just had to get a new box, something to do with the crown wheel? Anyway the casing was destroyed and i was getting a banging every time i tried to pull away. Eventually after i got it home the thing seized and i couldn't move the car, ended up needing a new box and clutch, hope yours aint as bad as mine was.......

Bit of an update, when the box was dropped we could see there was a very large hole in the casing, so they have taken the box apart and 4 of the Pelequin bolts have sheared of

I have spoken to pelequin and they seem to think it might have something to do with the matting surface between the ring gear and the diff not being flat not so sure myself.

What i am worried about now is putting the Diff back in a new box and the same thing happening, Are these bolts really strong enough for the Job??

one of many Peloquins I have heard to have suffered bolt failures.

I wont touch peloquin as a consequence. much as I despise dealing with quaife as a company i would use them over peloquin. you use VW bolts in their atb diff.

shame as when exchange rate was good it was a no brainer to save $$

Peloquin are sending out all the parts i need including stronger bolts apparently! so they must be aware that there is a problem with the older ones, i just gotta pay for shipping $87 they must be getting there own seat i reckon.

you must be the 7th car I have heard of with failed peloquin bolts.
never heard of a quiafe fail, but they dont supply bolts, you get them from good old VAG and they seem fine. go figure.
would have hoped for better from them personally.

You live and learn Bill i certainly wont be getting another. I would advise anyone fitting a Peloquin diff to have there ring gear grinded as they are saying this is a possible cause of bolts failing.

Hmmm, just fitted my pelaquin last weekend without having the ring gear grinded but I did use a lot of locktite on them but never great to hear these stories!!! Hope everything sorts out for you PhilM

I have now received my parts from Peloquin including the new ARP bolts, the ring gear has been grinded to ensure its completely flat, i also dropped of the gear sets from the new box to Frozen solid today for some cryogenic treatment. So fingers crossed it should be allot stronger box now.

Just a bit worried now that my clutch may have been damaged by the oil?
