Turbo cleaned

Have cleaned my turbo with the Innotec system to get rid of the dreaded cut into safe mod. It has worked for me! The car would cut into safe mode if I put my foot down in third and reached about 4000 rpm. Spent an afternoon under the car and now its smooth and powerful, especially after using the diesel cleaner as well.
Not a simple job! I do not recommend doing this with axle stands unless you can get the car well into the air as it is a bit awkward. The access to the exhaust bolts is not ideal and I used 3 different spanners to undo them. The drive shaft is the real pain and if I do it again this could be removed.
Would recommend making a solid plate to seal the cardboard gasket supplied against the turbo. I used the exhaust gasket to profile a piece of 6mm MDF. This clamped the gasket into place nicely and allowed the pumping of the stage 1 into the turbo. I then worked the actuator lever with a 14mm spanner. Left for an hour, reworked the lever and flushed the turbo. I managed to wrap a polythene bag around the turbo and collect the liquids. Without doing this the whole lot would have gone everywhere due to the drive shaft.
Rebuilt everything and tried to start the car... It would not start, panic, but after several attempts it fired up and kicked out a cloud of *****. Took the car for a quick blast and cleaned out the turbo and exhaust.
Took about 2.5 hours but was not rushing.
Better than a new turbo even if it needs doing again in the future.
Been driving now for 2 weeks and the car is so much smoother and easier to drive. Due to my commute it is difficult to open it up, camera's and mobile speed detectors everywhere. There is one stretch to floor it, but the the wallies stick to the outside lane at 40 to turn right a mile down the road!!

Sounds good! Ive been wanting to try it for a while, dont think mines quite as bad as your though, goes into limp at 3K in 4th and 5th unless i build up speed gently.

Good news.

Unfortunately I had mine done with the Innotec cleaner about 2 weeks ago and the problem has got worse if anything :( speaking to a diesel specialist today who says he can take out the turbo and take it apart to clean it "properly" - but £400 for the privelege...

why run cleaners through remove the turbo seperate it by undoing the four 10mm head bolts the turbo seperates and then you will have the VNT mechinism in front of you which you clean with carb cleaner, which evaporates and does not leave any debris or residue this way, which can lead to a premuture failure of the turbo, if it was approved method of cleaning the turbo im sure the dealers with make this service available

many thanks

I have been interested in the Innotech option, and positive reveiw is good to read. I took the information to a specialist and he could see what the cleaner product was attempting to do, but he was unsure to how succesful it would be.

In conclussion a turbo needs to be used or it gets sticky, make time to exercise and it will remain healthy. I have opted not to buy the Innotech kit, and loaded my car and accelerated in 3rd gear, obviously taking it easy to start with, then getting to the booting it stage. After beginning the exercise programme a few weeks ago it has not went into limp yet (and dare say appears more responsive and quicker), i probaly guess that a lot of soot has been deposited in the environment as a result of my exercise programme

I was skeptical as to whether the liquids would do the job, but having tried to blow the carbon out, with only short term success, I thought it worth trying. I am not a heavy right foot driver and with my commute it is difficult to consistently give the engine a blast out. It would be better to get the car on a good run regularly but time does not allow.
I live in the south of England and drive into South London every day, so traffic is very heavy and the cameras everywhere(5 on my journey). There is the M25, but in this area is like a giant carpark most of the time so not worth going on.
The Innotec has worked so far and it will be interesting to see how long it keeps it clean.

Richardc - I would be interested if you post future updates, just to see if the innotech clean might be needed once a year (for your particular style of driving)

was225 Its not really an option to just pop off the turbo undo 10mm bolts and clean the VNT. The car needs to be up on stands...the subframe on some TDI's, the drive shaft needs to come off...the engine pivoted in some cases before you even get to the turbo.

The turbo has been at a high temp and those 10mm bolts and cast casing will not come apart easy and you gotta be care full or it will break. Ideally new seals on the oil lines and a new gasket for the manifold.

So innotec and 3/4 bolts or 1bolt and a circlip its one hell of a difference.
