They should work with the engine off and with no keys in. Do they work with just the igniton on?

no ignition = sidelights

ignition + sides = sides + main beam on low voltage (via resistor)

ignition + main = sides + main beam full

then flash/high as usual
 
My sidelights only work with ignition on.

Not changed to HID or anything, never modified them at all.

Could it be that they just need changing?

What bulbs do I need, just standard front sidelight bulbs?

Hmm. Bit strange. Possible wiring issue with the switch? They should go through a constant live and not the igntion live that yours seems to be doing.

yup, just change the small sidelight bulbs. not sure on the size but 501 rings a bell. If you go to Halfords, the little book next to the bulbs isle will tell you.
