Not Starting

I'm now getting these symptoms on my car, but its intermittent.

It started intermittent starting at 6, giving the occasional starter motor screech when trying. It eventually started so I drove it. Then when I refilled at BP, I had to be pushed started out as it was "dead", but when I got back home and turned the key it fired up as normal. Been trying it ever since and its been fine.

Is it a replaceable wire or does it come straight out of the starter? My car is 4 years old (today incidentally!) so there's no warranty to fall back on.

Thanks in advance!

Bugger .. I've still got the clip downstairs and I believe you can replace it as long as you aren't too club fisted when disconnecting it like Mr AA man and snap it. You could always give a VAG specialist a call and ask as they must have had it on other Mk4s it can't just be the AA that know it's a common issue

Excellent, so it is replaceable. Cheers rashcupra!

Tony, if it doesn't start in the morning I'll call the AA as I'm fortunate enough to have 5 years free from SEAT. If he can't fix it, I'll get a push down the road to the local garage, I know the guy, he won't be ripping me off :)

Cheers guys, I'm so glad its not going to be expensive, I'm skint and I've just been paid :(

Thanks again guys, much appreciated!

Now doing this again, car's currently sitting outside my sisters house, luckily an ok part of town, not like it can be stolen anyway. So another call to Mr AA in the morning to get this sorted and then a journey to the stealers to get this sorted properly and should be under warranty

Tony, mine's broken 3 times now in this short time! Make sure the garage extends the wire as well as fitting a new connector. That way it shouldn't happen again.

Mine was done this way a month ago and its been fine since.

Where did you take yours? I really don't want to go to Motorvogue!

All 3 times were AA, the last time I stood over the guy and made sure he did it properly. I got 5 years free AA cover with my Cupra.

Any competant auto electrician can do it, but Lion Garage at Sixfields will take the most care of it.

All sorted for £45 .. he phoned Motorvogue to ask a couple of questions and they were clueless apparently, hadn't ever heard of this breaking which is surprising. So he phoned VW and asked them and they were well aware of it and told him what was best. So wire now has slack in it (but not too much that it'll catch on anything else and get torn out)
