Ibiza TDI 130 problems... Help / advice needed!

Having problems with my Ibiza TDI 130 that i purchased last week from a dealer about 50 miles away. After 4 or 5 days it conked out going round a roundabout, on the way out of the roundabout i applied the accelerator and there was nothing. It was in 3rd gear and i was doing around 20-30mph (big open roundabout). I had to stop and put the hazzard lights on and try and start it again.

It started again after 3 or 4 attempts and ran perfectly again until saturday, when it gave up on me on the shore road. I was in a line of traffic and someone was turning right into an industrial estate in near my house. I slowed to a stop with the clutch pedal right in, and took it out of gear, whacked the hand brake on, and then when i went to move off i realised it had conked out again.

I never felt anthing either of the two times like you would if you stalled a car or anything. It wouldnt start again so I had to get it towed, and when being towed it started again when put into gear. I took the car up to a friends house who has a VAG COM later on and on the way there it gave up when i came to a stop again because i got a telephone call. Luckily i was on a hill, so i rolled down building up speed and put it into gear and got it started again. On the way into my friends street it died on me going round the corner in 2nd gear, so i had to push it the last 200 meters or so! It wouldnt start at all standing still...

Luckily my friend knows a bit more about cars than me, and he put it into 1st gear, made it tick over... it chugged... then started. Really weird problem, because the only relevant error showing up on the VAG COM is:

Address 09 -------------------------------------------------------
Controller: 6Q1 937 049 C
Component: 00 BN-SG. 1S33
Coding: 00140
Shop #: WSC 06402
1 Fault Found:
01598 - Drive Battery Voltage
07-10 - Signal to Low - Intermittent

Any ideas or help much appreciated! I hope someone knows of a common fault with a silly sensor or something?

Im only guessing because I'm not familair with VAG.com, but could it be either negative/earth lead not properly tightened on battery, or it's not earthing properly to the body? Tis could explain intermittent low voltage.

Bad engine earths can kill the engine and electrics as soon as it comes detached from its grounding point.

Its not one I've heard of before in my many years of MK4 Ibizas, but bad earths could be the cause.

Thanks Tom B. Do you think if that was the problem the other things, such as lights etc, would be affected? Because I dont recall the lights or other electronics turning off?

I dont really want to have to hand the car back to the dealer is it something as simple as that, so i am going to get my local mechanic to have a look at it tomorrow and see if there is anything obvious such as that. If not, i will be leaving it back to the dealer i bought it from, as it is unsafe to drive with this intermittant problem.

If there are any other ideas, or people can confirm what has already been said please let me know. If not, i will post back as soon as the problem is identified for sure.

Think she's back on the road guys. I have drove down to the republic of ireland in it with a full tank of high octane stuff from BP, "BP Ultimate Diesel". Has ran fine really, although i noticed slight hesitation twice over the 200 mile journey. I have a funny feeling its been water that gave me the trouble, and although i am no expert, the symptoms make sense.

On the way home I had no hesitation from the car at all and havent had any problems since. So i am nearly 100% that bad fuel was to blame!

NAMED AND SHAMED: Jet Filling station, shore road, newtownabbey, county antrim, northern ireland.

Full service done on the car now. Seems to be running ok. Some really dodgy merchants about these days. Putting all sorts in their fuel to water it down to make an extra penny or two!!!

Well you did mention Jet - over here in Scotland I think that they have vanished - well from any sites that I was aware of - and yes back in the "80s" and "90s" they were all well known for giving you free water in the fuel - maybe something to do with maning them mainly with school kids and other cheap labour - and carrying out no maintenance on the tanks.

Funny you say that... There was a Jet station in Paisley and a few of my friends had various problems with their cars that they eventually narrowed down to being the fuel from there.

Since I started driving TDI's... I've serviced on the button, used Shell Diesel Extra and always used OEM Parts/Quality oil and never once had a problem in over 80K.

If it ever happens again check the coolant temp sensor and crankshaft position sensors. Common faults on VAG cars and often cause random cut-outs.

Oh Dear guys... 9 months on and it happened again on friday night!!! This time i really dont think its dodgy diesel. Thinking logically i think its either a fuel system problem, or something silly electronically, because i have done 185 miles since the last fill up, which was BP Ultimate Diesel from a relatively newly built garage. If it had of been water in this i would have seen the symptoms before now as water would normally sink to the bottom of the tank.

I have also just had a service carried out about 50 miles ago, on Tuesday past which is strange too, because a new fuel filter was fitted, so everything should be nice and clean.

I was turning into a left hand junction at about 15mph in second with the clutch pedal fully released, didnt hear the engine knocking off or feel any normal signs of stalling (which it shouldnt have anyway) and she wouldnt start again.

After 20 mins or so trying to start it and getting the tow loop out for the front, i stuck it in first and started it with the clutch out to chug it up onto the kerb for the night, and as soon as the back wheel moved over the small kerb lip the engine started.

Strange and annoying. Any further input much appreciated guys.

Battery Charged ?

Silly question, when the car packs up, is the battery flat, or charged OK.

Seems fine to be honest. When i chugged the car forward in gear to get it up a slope on the footpath to move the car up on the kerb the car started, so surely if there was a problem with the battery it wouldnt have the power to chug forward would it?
