You can put your own custom backgrounds on the Alpine, its not simple but doesn't take long when you've got the software.

Quick update.....

The clutch and flywheel went in to be fitted around a month ago, but with the old clutch and dmf removed, new clutch on we then found that the smf wouldnt go on the crank...no amount of emery or persuasion was going to get it on. So the old had to go back on leaving me very frustrated (it's not as if i could just send the smf back!).

Well, my mechanic took it back on monday night, clutch and dmf off, smf and crank measured up and the smf sent off to be machined out. It's due it's first MOT in a few weeks so it was kind of handy that the nearside CV boot decided to split last week (even if it did coat the alloy in grease), so that was replaced whilst he was poking around in there. Car dropped off about an hour ago all safe and sound!!!

First off (and i was fully aware of this before I went down the smf route), it's damn loud!!! Whilst idling in neutral it really does now sound like an old-skool oil burner :) Thing is I can live with it, just depends if everyone else can. Bite is a wee bit sharper setting off in first, but the clutch feels really nice. It's not stiff at all like I imagined and gear changes feel really smooth. More importantly I now have no slippage :) :) :) I've got another trip to Scotland this weekend, so that sees to the 500 miles running in period! I just hope I escape the Spec horror stories of late!

Another great thing is how much it cost to get fitted.....SMF machining, fitting and new CV boots for £120 :)

That's a bloody good price for fitting, really hope it beds in ok and lasts - will be watching with interest. Did you find the stock DMF based system a bit 'muddy' with regards to bite and feel, especially in 1st?

I found that when setting off in first on the stock dmf and clutch there seemed to be an area of hesitation between the biting point and actually moving off. Pretty difficult to describe, is this what you mean by "muddy"?

Biting point in first now is lovely now compared to stock, it doesn't grab as in it's on/off but you can now definitely feel its engaged. Top!!!

just to add....

....back from Scotland and now nearly 600 miles on the new clutch and flywheel! Clutch feels great, pedal feels very similar to oem and clutch now actually feels like it's engaging properly! w00t!!! Now, lets just hope it doesn't disintegrate like caveo's :(

correct!!! although forgive me for not saying which one :p

Clutch has now done nearly 700 miles and feels great. Kind of getting used to the flywheel clattering about when idling and the feel from the clutch is very nice. Setting off in first is taking some getting used to as i'm used to the "muddy" (thanks fester!) oem unit. This is not exactly on/off but you can defintaley feel engagement. Happy as larry so far, just hope it continues so and doesn't blow up.

Have a few bits arriving this week in the shape of some decent mats. I currently have some with the FR badge embroidered on, but they are tatty as hell and slide all over. Managed to get some with the oval fittings on with red trim for £15 of fleabay. oh...and a new set of smoked repeaters as i managed to snap the last ones!

will post some piccies when fitted.

After seeing some pics in the Readers Rides section, i've also been tempted with painting the big S grill badge and although I have an idea, i'm not entirely sure how to go about it. Been on the lookout for some front light covers too.

I'm still going to keep an eye on this as i'm going to need a clutch at some point, does it feel more like driving a car of ten years ago with a proper clutch? I still HATE that muddy OE feel with a passion. It always feels like it's going to break and the bite and feel in 1st is atrocious :(

just a quick update as i've not done one in months!

Clutch is still going strong, so hopefully I managed to get one that isn't a duffer (touch wood though!).

Mod-wise, things really haven't been happening sue to the cost of fatherhood :). Its bonus time in a couple of months so plan on getting my wheels refurbed and powdercoated, although not sure which colour to go for yet. Love anthracite but feel that might make the 17's look too small?)

Also took the Carbonio out as it felt like it was restricting power a touch.

Mods done so far....

Tints
Upsolute remap
Spec stage 2 clutch and SMF
Alpine HU
Sunnies holder
Drilled airbox with Green panel filter and 3" feed
Tinted "S" and FR grille badge

Mods to do....

Black angel eyes with HID's
312mm brake upgrade and powdercoat calipers
Get wheels refurbed and powdercoated
Rear spacers
Boost gauge (already got it, just waiting for my nevpod :))
SFS hoses

better get saving )and get some pictures up!)

Looking good mate. I know exactly what you boys mean about a muddy clutch, almost feels like its slipping. How much was the new clutch and do you need/is it worth changing the fly wheel. I'm thinking about remapping mine soon so i guess the next step would be the clutch.

I think the clutch and flywheel set me back around £800 including fitting. This was imported directly from spec in the states, so it would no doubt cost a bit more now the exchange rate is so poo (and don't forget there is a hefty import tax included in that too). It's rated at 411ft/lb torque so should see me ok for the life of the car :). It just made sense financially to go for the SMF at the same time.

It just feels so solid whenever you engage the clutch, how much of this is down to the flywheel i'm not sure, but i'm not complaining about it. If you can live with the clatter you get from the flywheel while its idling i'd say go for it. I know Spec have had some bad press recently, but I can't fault mine at the moment.......just hope it doesn't break though :)
