Just went out in my car and noticed a loud noise when under boost. It only seems to happen when accelerating and the turbo is boosting.

I can't seem to reproduce it when just revving at standstill, but it does sound a bit different.

It was fine earlier today, now this! Any ideas?

Could it be one of your boost pipes rattling against something?

I had a similar problem recently and cured it by cable tieing a bit of pipe insulation around one of the boost pipes. It was vibrating against the fuel filter housing and the engine cover.

Mines a TDI though so your 20VT might be different.

Could be I suppose. Couldn't see anything loose in the engine bay, but might be the turbo intake pipe underneath. I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can see anything.

Could be loose bolts but alot louder than I would expect them to be.

My first thought was the exhaust..maybe where the Milltek fits the cat. But I would hope it wouldn't do that! It was only fitted it a few months ago :(

I think it was the the infamous exhaust manifold to turbo bolts as they were just under a turn loose (I could only see 2). Managed to tighten them up after a load of messing round with extension bars, passing sockets under the big metal pipe with one hand and tightening them with another etc. and took it for a drive and no noise.

I didn't rev it too much as it was cold but was fine up to 3500rpm which was better than yesterday :)

I wonder how much boost I have been loosing

I think mine and your cars were built at the same time kriso, it seems the same faults affect them both!!!!

Definitely the bolts though.

You'll never get to that 3rd bolt without taking the TIP off and the heat sheild at the back. Got this down to 15mins now

:( Hopefully that one will stay tight. According to ElsaWin the bolts should be replaced and glue applied to them to stop this re-occuring.

The strut brace makes it and even tighter squeeze. I wonder if I could get a spanner on that 3rd bolt tho?
