Digging up an old thread here - interested in changing out the DMF for SMF and also want a new clutch too.

Make & Model: Seat - Leon
Year Span: 2001 - 2004
Engine: 1.9L
Includes: ARL, ASZ eng
Performance Kit: SA872 - $619
Flywheel: SV81A - $479

Spec Aluminium SMF and Stage2 spec clutch kit. I am aware this is going to chatter, however i have a decent stereo and i'm sick of the DMF muddying the performance of the car. Do any of you guys know UK suppliers for this stuff or am i better off ordering direct from SPEC themselves?

not any help at all UF, but a quick question for you...did you just change the friction plate in yours initially? If so, I take it your clutch still isn't how you'd like it?

I know the TT shop sale SPEC clutches at a good price if you want good back up but i found it a lot cheaper to get an American friend to buy straight from SPEC then post it to as a present. Why do you want an alloy flywheel other then Jason has got one?

Lighter I suppose - not sure how much difference that will make in a diesel.

Skullmunki - yes i have an uprated friction disc but the dual mass flywheel still seems to be an issue and i'm just not happy with the feel of the clutch. It's fine between gears when you're moving but 1st feels awful.

Ever thought why you probably haven`t heard about any other diesel or petrol cars on this or probably any other forum using an alloy flywheel ? Alloy flywheels are weak due to the fact that alloy is weak. They are made by bolting a steel face on an alloy flywheel, the bolt holes take all the strain when you are engaging/disengaging the clutch and will brake the bolts or wear the holes making the plate loose. Alloy flywheels where made for motor sport use where every extra gram in weight counts plus the car would get stripped and checked regularly. Diesel only rev to 5K with max power about 3-4K it`s not like you are driving a V-Tec 12000 rpm engine with no power until 7-8k. If you want a very light flywheel just get the already lightened steel fly skimmed or drilled it doesn`t cost much.

The primary thing i want is SMF - if alloy is weak then i'll just get a steel one. Not really that worried about weight. I would get a G60 one but that's not valid for this application - for the 5 speed box only.

I was quite suprised how T.Sparks TDi sounded with the SMF. Thought it was giong to be alot louder than it actualy is.

If I was doing mine all again I'd really consider the SMF route.

Mine's loud, but I don't really care. The clutch is so awesome that I wish I'd got one ages ago. SPEC assured me when I was speaking to them in the US, that the alloy flywheel does not sacrifice any strength over the steel version - It just weighs 9lb compared to stock 16lb for the steel SMF.

If I had to criticise it, it's too easy to stall - but thats perhaps the driver, not the clutch. ;)
