Absolutely stunning, best SEAT design I have ever seen!!! That's a small Audi with a Lamborghini touch. The Mk5 won't have competitors!

Now I laugh when I see a 207 or a Clio.

As they all share the same PQ24 chassis they're all nearly Identical @2460-2461W.B.!!! The FabiaII rides on the newer PQ25 yet based on dimensions & the like it's obviously a carryover...:cry: If we're lucky enough to see the rumored multi-link set-up even on the A1 then I suppose it would receive the PQ26 designation.

The A1 should definetly have the multi link rear suspension as they want mini blood.

Apparently the chassis the A1 will sit on is a modified PQ24 called the MQB platform, which means modular transverse matrix in english. Its meant to be cheaper to build and be more flexible. Follows in the footsteps of the MLP chassis of the A4/A5.

Lost icon inspires SEAT designer Donckerwolke

More information from Luc Donckerwolke (SEAT's Head of Design) regarding his inspiration for the Bocanegra and his future direction for the brand.

Things are changing at SEAT – and design is at the forefront of establishing VW Group's Spanish subsidiary as a exciting, sporty brand rather than a budget brand.

The latest evidence is the Bocanegra concept, unveiled at Geneva and giving a strong idea of what the next-generation Ibiza will look like. The car is the work of SEAT design director Luc Donckerwolke, and he's drawn inspiration for the car from one of the few original designs in SEAT's pre-VW history – the 1200S Bocanegra coupe that was built from 1974-1980.

“It's one of few design icons in SEAT's past, as we have a history of building Fiats under licence,” he said. “When I started working on the Ibiza two-and-a-half years ago I came across the original Ibiza of 1984 – but then I came across the Bocanegra, a car that had the same clean design of the Ibiza, but a car that nobody knows.”

In fact the car was based on the Fiat 128, but with a hint of the original Lancia Delta about its lines – plus a distinctive black 'nose' – a feature that has been replicated on Donckerwolke's new Bocanegra.

“The Bocanegra is not the Ibiza, it is part of the communication process that leads to the Ibiza. It has the same DNA, but here you see a more extrovert version. If this is Superman, the Ibiza will be Clark Kent!”

The car combines elements of the old Bocanegra and the 'new' SEAT design DNA created by Donckerwolke's predecessor Walter Da Silva - “so strong and charismatic”, he said, including the distinctive swooping panel line around the front wheel arch.

The Bocanegra's influence will continue in other future SEATs, especially a new coupe that will become a new flagship for the brand – an exciting prospect for Donckerwolke, whose CV includes the Lamborghini Murcielago and Gallardo supercars. “I think a coupe fits the brand,” he said. He said he would be “very tempted” to use the Bocanegra name on this car.

Donckerwolke is also working on a new large saloon for SEAT – a successor to the Toledo. This will be a much more up-market car, based on the Audi A4 platform. Donckerwolke said this would be less radical and less sharp than the Bocanegra. Instead it will be “more elegant and refined”.

He said: “I don't like to make clones of cars – so you won't see the same designs being scaled up or down. Every model will have its own identity.”

Yer, I am liking the coupe talk.

However i just hope with all this talk of "more up-market / refined " though it sounds good and no doubt its what we want as customers. I just hope it isn't an indication of them pushing their products into Audi/VW price brackets.

If they are great cars but in the same affordable context we've been used to, then I can see them being a great success. A4/BMW3 series territory, if they get it right. it could be a serious coup for them. But its a tough market out there so it will have to impress yet be affordable.

So bocanegra = awesome in everyway
New Ibiza = shy, quiet, boring and clumsy?

Worrying.

I think this "concept" looks great and the Bocanegra name should definitely be used on something equally stunning, but from the quote above it seems we're not going to be getting a look at the Bolero saloon (A4 based Toledo replacement) just yet. Did I misunderstand but weren't we expecting something along those lines to be shown at Geneva with a view to the production launch in early 2009? :shrug:

We may just have to wait for Madrid for anything anymore concrete.:censored:
Oh & word has it that Donckerwolke is having trouble getting the Bolero approved on the A4 chassis!!!:runaway:

Off hand quote to the press. It's smokes and mirrors in this industry, keep your competitors off guard.

But no production car will look exactly like a concept, all that bling will get toned down considerably.

But we've had it on good authority that what your looking at is an Ibiza (3door), give or take the bling. It may not be as flared as the concept, and certainly it will be less outrageous. SEAT have produced fairly good concept cars, close to the final production car. So i can't see the form changing very much. Look at the Megane Coupe concept Renault showed yesterday, more chance the pope will become a Budhist than Renault building a Megane with gullwing doors.

Money no object you could have cars of your wildest dreams, but a manufacturer will never sign off on them because of the cost, and the cost to the end consumer.

Market forces will dictate this car's fate as does almost every single car that goes into production with any brand.

I love the front of that.. The exhaust looks dire like that though, and it's a good thing the chances of that interior staying are slim to none.. lol
