On the market since 2001, the current VW Polo will be replaced with the fifth generation model in spring 2009. It is speculated that VW will introduce new variants of the popular hatchback starting with a coupe-like fastback four-door model (pictured above). Also expected to make market debut in 2010 is a mini-MPV Polo-van based on the successful Skoda Roomster platform. And additionally, a traditional booted version will be available as three and five-door version for markets in Asia, Russia and surprise, surprise...the US. The Polo will naturally offer a large choice of fuel and diesel engines and Blue Motion technology. No word yet regarding a hybrid version.
The new Polo V will stand against stiff competition such as the new Opel Corsa, upcoming Ford Fiesta due in 2008 and its own sibling rivalry with the new Seat Ibiza set to launch in summer 2008. This new Ibiza marks the first model under the guidance of Seat’s new designer, Luc Donkerwolke, formerly from Lamborghini and Skoda since 1998.
Based on spy photos, two artists renderings are showing the Polo V and one photo from our files of the new VW Polo Fastback five-door.

The chassis is essentially an elongated version of the old Fabia/Current Polo & Ibiza platform. None of those vehicles were ever renowned for their taught handling like the similarly sized Peugeot/Renault and Ford offerings unless they were the top models. The engines are getting old and there has been no promise of the newer VAG units being used (TSIs or 2.0 TDIs). Unless there is some serious tweaking, I fear it'll be more of the same rather than a bold step forward. VAG are skint too, so no money for major redevelopment - the facelift MK5 Golf is testament to that.
The reporter said he went to Audi (who are in control of Seat) to see the new five-door and didn't give it a second mention. My hunch is that it's totally unremarkable in the styling stakes and that the three-door is more deserving of attention once launched towards the end of the year.
That's what I reckon is a more realistic situation, rather that the fantasy of some swoopy, mega motored Ibiza that we all want.

Woah there. Do you have a date for that article cause the whole VAG group positioning has been switched about a while ago and SEAT is now again under VW influence. However the majority of the SEAT models to come will have obviously been developed whilst under Audi's influence.
The fact that he did not mention the 5 door, and assuming that it means its unremarkable is wrong. Chances are in non sport guises it will be boring, like stylances, but non sport models sell big in such countries like spain, greece etc.
We will probably see a 122hp TSI unit in the new Ibiza however I doubt (or more so hope) that the 1.4TSI with 170/180hp will not be used in the next FR or Cupra.
As for the new generation of small engines VAG have plenty in development, and I think its pretty certain that the next ibiza will indeed get a 2.0TDI. The next cupra will most likely get a 1.8 TFSI, now you guys might think its the same old engine but its not. Audi has throughly reworked the 1.8 Turbo as they want it to be their prided workhorse engine like it has been in the past.
Just expect it to be smoother, have more torque, more torque available throughout the rev range and earlier, cleaner emissions and drinking less fuel. VAG are also developinng a 1 litre engine that should be available in 2011.
BTW were did you hear that VAG are skint. Back in the 90's VAG was in big trouble, but they have done a complete turnaround, particularly Audi, which is VAG's "golden goose" and tipped by business analysts to overtake BMW and Mercedes by 2012.
Even Porsche were near death in the 80's but look at them now, no one makes more profit than porsche for the amount of vehicles they sell. And with porsche possibly taking full control of VW with a takeover (yes porsche are that rich) then VAG will really be in a position that will worry the rest of the worlds car manufacturers.
Even SEAT have made profits this year, skoda has been making profits for ages, and VW is making good profits. Audi's curren growth is phenomenal with year on year strong sales. Infact VAG have just invested several billions in R&D, which is hardly the actions of a skint company.

With a 1.8TFSI or 2.0TFSI please
My earlier post quoting from 14th Feb 2008's Fleet News was about a visit to Ingolstadt the previous Friday (so recent as in this month). I'd consider adjectives like boring and unremarkable to be one in the same. The reporter was clearly more impressed with the forthcoming coupé offering, my guess is that the five-door is a Plain-Jane Fabia looker with some Altea creases and overly large front grille for good measure.
I cannot see how VAG could justify developing the old 1.8 further when the newer, flexible and well proven 2.0 turbo would do - why waste money? Audi don't use the 1.8 as far as I know, and are following the force fed 1.4 route in lieu of that unit.
VAG's positioning on developing new models (and therefore, saving money) has been demonstrated recently in the new supermini platform being mainly the same as we already have. Similarly, the costly multi-link rear of the MK5 Golf has been widely reported as being ditched in favour of something cheaper to manufacture. No sign of the rumoured upgrades to the R32, despite Skoda getting the bigger powerplant for the Superb.
As for billions on a new R&D facility - I wouldn't expect anything less of a manufacturer that wants to preserve its position ahead of the rivals; Ford/Mazda have made big strides forward in recent years with a similar attitude.
That's how I feel about it. Porsche now being able to get their mitts on VAG will be interesting, although I can't see a return to them nicking a van engine for a new model again.
In all honsety, i can't see SEAT re-hashing the old Ibiza. The success of the Mk2 Leon should show them that they are on the right track. To shove a poor handling, cheap small car in under it would be just daft.
It surely has to be a new chassis, new body car the apppeals to the SEAT buyer. After all, if we wanted to be sensible, we'd buy a Skoda, if we wanted to show off, we'd get the Audi and if we wanted to look like we wanted and Audi but couldn't afford it, we'd buy the VW. (no offence VW owners).
If they don't do that, surely the entire marketing team want sacking. Surely the market has been and will be crying out for a sporty but affordable small car.
The competition is strong now, Corsa, Fiesta, Fiat 500, Mini, The choice is almost endless. Surely SEAT have to put themselves in the strongest position possible.
Or has common sense deserted them like almost every other industry with a middle level layer of pointless beaurocracy?

It's not the old 1.8T it's all new even chain driven now... Audi use the 1.8TfSI in the A4 as well as the A5(expected to replace the 2.0FSI 150HP-shortly)! In addition to the Seat models I've listed above the AlteaXL also gets it. So do the Skoda OctaviaII & will the SuperbII when it's debut's shortly after Geneva!!!
The MK6 Golfs rear suspension will continue to be based on the Multi-Link set-up designed for the PQ35 platformed cars. Just the PQ36 platform will incorporate a simpler version of this. Fewer parts to help cut down on the assembly time & thus make up some of the profit VAG competitors are making by still using Torsen-beam rear suspensions... The R36 is/will be available depending on what VW distributors market your in! Skoda will only be getting this 3.2 engine in the Superb{=Passat} not in the Octavia{=Golf} at this time!

they lost their way since the MK3....I can only hope the new MK5 offers something different and puts the sportyness back into what a hot hatch should be....take the corsa VXR for example
Wider? Longer? Last I checked the PQ25{FabiaII} chassis had the basic dimensions as the PQ24{FabiaI,IbizaIV,PoloIV...} it's based on???

Seems that all Seat's on the PQ35 chassis get this engine to choose from with the Stylance or Sport-Up trim! Really is quite a nice little engine! Glad to have been of help.
