Forum Comment from a new member

Hi All

I am sure I will get slapped down for this but I feel I have to mention it.

As you all are, I love my cars. I also find the associated forum and it's community is all part of it. Meet like minded people and talk geek. As you may guess (post count and sig) I am a new Cupra R owner so my first stop is here and I am keen to start posting and get to know you all. But I am disheartened somewhat by many of the members which I have never encountered on any other forum. Which is especially when a new(ish) member posts a "common" question and they are immediately slapped down and told to search. Now, this may be valid but it in no way encourages people to stick around nor encourages a "community". So what if it is a "common" question - it's not for the person who posted it - let it be answered and in many cases as you all know a thread will develop into something else which encourages knowledge sharing and more importantly in my view encourages "relationships" to start between members Etc etc.

If you find it so offensive that someone has asked a question before don't respond to it.

Finally... Remember the more posts and even repeated post which usually move onto other subjects actually give people data to search in the first place.

I guess I am just disappointed as new member the forum is not as warm as I was hoping.

Just to add weight to the other side of the coin as it were, if you have 20, 30 or even up to 50 or 60 newbies joining in a week or so, these type of questions are asked time and time again, *Ad Nauseum*. Most sites have a wealth of info in their archives, hence the 'use the search ' comments.. im pretty sure you or anyone else for that matter is not being victimised by any of the comments , jibes etc.

I must admit I have not been asked to search. But I see it an awful lot.

Just as an example I am a member of alfaowner (I am an ex 156 owner) and I find it hard to remember "search" as an answer. And trust me with an Alfa the same questions get brought up all the time!!!! They have way more common faults than SEATs.

Like many others, I use the search facility a great deal. It's extremely frustrating to have to weed through stacks of repetitive threads (where the same question is being asked time and time again) to find the real information needed.

Every time another thread is started asking the same old thing, the harder genuine searching becomes.

That I do agree with and perhaps I have just come across some of the ratty members slapping posters down. Perhaps an link to a previous post is more useful. Then at least a conversation can start...?

some sites are a LOT more Draconian than this one fella.. REALLY.

the guys on here that do the Modding etc are a good blend and theres no real 'nazis' on here unlike some forums that have existed

perhaps there are a few angry bears but its more characterful than nasty. and often 2 posts later the tone changes to a happier state.

i think the banter is nothing extreme and by far most seem to be happy.

some of the forums ive visited have lacked technical knowledge, but scn has more seat knowledge and experience than anywhere i know of. so its vital as a resorce tool to keep it managed and easy to use. that may not be as important on other car sites?

It's a fine balance. You can't please everyone all of the time.

The forum appears to work well and keeps up a good level of relevant useful information. Yet also remaining a socially active site, not as fluffy as some might like but it's the information that is of key importance.

IMO it takes effort from both sides of the coin. Newbies need to put in the effort to appeal to the forum regulars as much as forum regulars need to be welcoming to newbies.

The kind of newbies that tend to ask the same questions are not really bringing anything of value to the content of the forum. But then in the same instance it depends on the person too. A newbie might ask the same kind of question but presents it in a different manner that resorts in a different reaction.

my first proper post was a question about if people could recommend where to get a new gear knob one from because the one on mine is abit skank.
I searched and posted in the thread i thought most appropriate (about buying gear knobs) and withing 10 mins id had a reply from a member telling me that the original poster had made the thread years ago.
I was abit confused at the pointlessness of searching, finding the article and then being moanded at because it was an old thread lol

I don't think they meant to moan at you, they were just trying to be helpful in saying the original poster hadn't been around for a long while.

Keep on using the search you'll get used to knowing when's the right time to start a new thread.
