how does the glovebox come out?

can anyone tell me how the glove box is removed? i realize there only seems to be a few torx screws holding it in but is there any chance i could set off the airbag when removing it.also will this give me access to the wires behind the head unit?

the reason i ask is that im fitting a new head unit and cant get it in for all the new wires, tried taking out the tray below the head unit but then i cant get this back in if the head unit is in place .

Dont worry you will not set the airbags of by removing the glove box I have done this and unless you have hands the size of a smurf and arms like a snake it doesnt make access any easier really

thanks for the replys guys but i eventually got the cd player in without resorting to taking the glove box out. after much jiggery-pokery and a pair of nicely cut up hands i got the bugger in.
very tight squeeze but i seemed to get alot of the wiring through a little opening towards the back left hand side at the top of the unit.

I think it gives more room for wiring, also means if your hands near the gearstick the headunit is closer to you!

I've got mines on the lower half of the double-din slot also.

Incase this comes up in someones search or if your wanting to know - removing the glovebox to fit the headunit isn't required - removing the top skin of it is though and thats a doddle.

Open the glovebox and look inside, you'll see the top skin is held in with two torx (T20) screws at the rear, remove these and then look at the top of the glovebox (Where the catch is) there are two torx screws there two at either edge - remove these and pull the top skin down.

Then remove the connection from the passenger airbag removal switch, do not turn on the ignition with this disconnected. It won't do any harm but once reconnecting you'll have a nice airbag light on the dashboard you'll need to clear with VAG-COM/Dealership.

Removing the skin isn't essential for fitting a headunit, but I done it and put the ISO connections up there and connected them to the headunits loom, leaving the only connections to go into the headunit are the Loom & Aeriel - it fits in snug and no wires getting in the way.
