VAG-Com cable bought. not seen by ross-tech vagcom

i bought this cable

it says that its compatible with VAG-com 409.1

i installed the drivers. appears on the pc fine, but vag-com doesn't pick it up. i have tried versions - 311.2 , 409.1 and the latest one. they all say -
USB Port ready.
Interface status - not found

doesn't matter if i plug it into my car or not what am i doing wrong!?

First thing to check would be the COM port settings.

1) go to control panel on windows, select system (you may have to switch to classic view to find it if using XP), a new window should appear, click the hardware tab at the top, within the window click on device manger.

2) Hopefully the device manager should pop up, scroll down to Ports and expand the tree by clicking the plus, you should be able to see USB serial port (COM X) where X is a number.

3) Right click on the USB serial port and select properties, a new window should appear, click on the Port settings tab at the top and select advanced within the window, another new window should appear.

4) the top option should be COM Port Number and a drop down list, select a port number from COM 1 to COM 4 and remember what you have picked. OK the windows to set the COM port...

5) fire up VAG-COM with the OBDII cable plugged into the laptop (the other end doesn't have to be in the car at this point), click on options and in the select COM port options area select the com port that you assigned earlier. Click test and fingers crossed it should work.

I have a similar problem. The cable works fine when the engine is off but I get 'interface not found' and 'unknown protocol' errors when engine on. I think these cables just dont work basically and you need the Ross Tech one.

My cheap one seems to be able to connect to all the control modules and works while the engine in running. Error code checking all seems to work, the sampling rate for logging is not great (~1.3 seconds) but is good enough for my needs. You could argue that you get what you pay for, and I'm happy with cheap and cheerful (but working) for now.

I tried the 9600 baud rate thing but didn't make any difference I have the blue USB cable from ebay. It worked ok in my old Golf mk3. I might try getting a serial cable..

Off to try it again on my other laptop this time and version 311 instead of 409.

Not sure about other cars with other cables, but i find in mine that the connection has a fair amount of play in it, so i'm never sure if the damn thing is in right or not. Frankly i don't trust the LED on the top. Maybe a good fiddle might help.

Unfortunately i'm not sure what else to suggest, my success was through trial and error rather than any specialist knowledge as to how the damn thing works. The cable came from mediasave on ebay and has a usb connection.

Good luck with it all, you never know it might work eventually.

I've just bought the same cable (China sourced) and had the same issue. Got it working today thru the following actions:

1. Remove all VAG software
2. Delete drivers from Control Panel/System/Devices (the cable need to be plugged in so you can see them)
3. Reboot
4. Reinstall the s/w supplied on the CD-ROM.
5. Reboot
6. Plug in the USB cable and when prompted to search for drivers point to CD-ROM \KKL Vag-com V409\409.1VAG-COM USB_Driver (various prompts during install which you need to respond to..)
7. Reboot
8. Start software and go into Config -Select COM3 (not USB) and hey presto..

The instructions they provided are copied from the VAG website and the prompts are not the same..

Seat Ibiza. It works fine with engine off, but not when engine running. It says cant find the interface. Worked ok on my old mk3 Golf.

Cheers, MD. Still getting the same problem tho..have fiddled with baud rate etc but no difference. I'm getting a serial port vag-com lead from eBay instead to see if that works.

Hang on -just had a look at the photos of your Ibiza. Is it 2006 or later? If yes, I think you're going to need the CAN interface cable, not the old one. To make you feel better -I did the same thing with my 2006 Leon. Got the ODB2 cable but couldn't talk to the car. Then bought the CAN cable (Talktomycar.co.uk) and it worked fine.

No CAN interface only came in in 2006 so it won't work for you.

As I said before the only reason I can see that it works without the engine running but not with is electronic interference. -Try a different cable to see if the problem still occurs.

Driver Installation Instructions
Note: These instructions are for Windows XP (which we recommend). Installation under Windows 98/ME/2000 is similar, but not necessarily identical. Make sure you have already downloaded and installed VAG-COM Software on your PC before following these instructions.
Download the driver here (http://images.auctionworks.com/hi/69/68740/USB_Dr iver.rar). It is recommended that you save it in its own folder on your computer for future use.
Open the driver file and "unzip" the file into its own folder. If your version of windows does not support the ".rar" format, you can enable the format here (http://images.auctionworks.com/hi/69/68740/Winrar %203.5.exe).
Plug your Ross-Tech USB Interface to your PC's USB port.
(It is not necessary to connect the interface to the vehicle yet)
"Found New Hardware Wizard" will start. choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"
On the next screen:
Select "Search for the best driver in these locations"
Check "Include this location in the search:"
Use the [Browse] button to find the folder you saved the driver files in. Click "OK" then "Next"
"Hardware Installation" screen pops up. Click "Continue Anyway"
Click "Finish" NOTE: If the new Hardware Found Wizard does not appear when you plug in your interface, go to Device Manager and look for the interface. It should be under Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controllers or under Other Devices. If it's there, Right-Click it and then select Update Driver. Then you can start at Step 4 in the instructions above.

Determine the correct "Port" setting
Note: These instructions are for Windows XP (which we recommend). Installation under Windows 98/ME/2000 is similar, but not necessarily identical.
Open the Device Manager and determine which COM Port the cable is using and make sure it occupies its own COM Port. This is the COM Port setting you use when you "Test" the interface in the Vag-Com software setup.

Plug the Vag-Com Cable into an available USB port on your computer.
Now open the "Device Manager". Open the "Control Panel", click the "System" icon, in the "Hardware" tab Click "Device Manager".
In the Console Tree, double click "Ports (COM & LPT)"
Verify that the device "USB KKL Interface VCP" has its own COM Number that is not in use by another port. If you need to change it, double click the device, click the "Port Settings" tab, click "Advanced", then change the "COM Port Number".
Make a note of the COM Port number for setting the Vag-Com software.
Testing the COM Port in the Vag-Com Software

Plug the cable into the computer and into your vehicles socket. *Turn the ignition on.
Start the VAG-COM software.
Click the [Options] button.
In the "Select COM Port" box, select the "COM Port" that the device uses as displayed in the Device Manager. * The USB option is only available for Ross-Tech made USB Cables.
Click the [Test] button.
It should display "Interface Status: Found!".If this test is not successful check the following:

Other software or devices using USB ports or the same COM Port could be conflicting. To troubleshoot, Uninstall suspected software.
It will not work on vehicles with the CAN-BUS System.
The cable must be plugged into the vehicle with the ignition on.
Try each COM Port from 1-4 in Windows Device Manager.
Check that the driver is installed and configured as outlined above.
Troubleshooting
Solutions to the most common problems. For more detailed troubleshooting, see the User's Manual above.

First, make sure all directions above for installing driver files and configuring the COM Port where performed.
Make sure your using software Version 311.2 or 409.1 from http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/archives.html (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/archives.html). Install "For the Twin-USB Interface"
Make sure your using the item on a VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat vehicle.
Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000 adversely affects VAG-COM's ability to do real-time and makes communications with some controllers unreliable. If using Windows 2000 with Service Pack 1, you should apply Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3.
If when you try to connect to a control module, it won't connect or you get the error message "Can't Synch Baud Rate", go to the Options Screen and try setting the Start Baud to 9600. If 9600 doesn't work, also try 4800 and 1200. Turn the car's ignition OFF and back ON after each failed attempt to connect!
