LC power loss/weird sound on engine start (need advise)

Hi all,

As newbie I would like to enquire your help with problems currently facing on my recently bought 2001 LC (180bhp).

During a recent testdrive in Germany I noticed that my car only reached 185km/h (115mp/h)* and it had to work hard to do so. To my knowledge this LC-type should easily run up to 220km/h (138 mp/h). The car is completely standard (apart from an already installed K03 turbo). The car also stutters in mainly 2nd/3rd gear at a low RPM (between 1500-2500). Could this have anything to do with the MAF?

Also during these cold days I sometime notice a weird sound coming from the front end of the car sounding (like a jet-engine starting) ones turning the ignition on. After switching off the engine the sound disappears again like shutting off a jet-engine. At the 2nd starting attempt the sound doesn't show up ! Any ideas?

Also coming from the reading of the computer I have these following fault codes. Are these a threat to my car?

- 00285 / ABS RPM sensor malfunction RV-G45 (sometimes occurs)
- 16514 / O2 sensor Circ., Bank 1 - sensor 1 malfunction
- 16885 Vehicle speed sensor range/performance

* Clocked also by my brothers VR6, so no telemetry fault!

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Dunno, but logically the sound would reappear when starting it for the 2nd attempt?! Also this sounds raises hairs overall my body, so that couldn't be good, I think

If you are smelling petrol it is because it is running rich as your Oxygen sensor needs replacing. May do well to change the MAF too.

quite possibly incorrect.

IS NOT always the lambda at fault.it has just cost me 104 +VAT and labour to find this out.I still have the same fault code on my vrs AFTER changing the #1 lambda probe.

I am no expert by any means, and your's could be a completely different problem.

But i've been having a few issues with mine since buying a couple of months back, occational stuttering at low rev's etc. Originally thought it was a coil pack breaking down, however a diagnostics test showed up other posibilities and not the coil packs. So a few people here suggested it could be the MAF. They said to drive the car, then stop and unplug the MAF, then drive it again for a short time. If there was a difference then its most likely the MAF, if not then probably not.
Well we tried this out last night on our way home after using the car for the day. I had been driving all day, and because I use the car often I didnt really notice anything different, but we swapped drivers and my hubby noticed how the car seemed to have hardly any pull like it should in lower gears. So he unplugged it and OMG what a difference, the car turned into an animal, couldnt believe I hadnt noticed it but I guess because im usually not flooring it with a baby in the back its not completley obvious.

So anyway as I say, no expert, but it cant hurt to give that a try. Just dont drive the car for too long after unplugging. I'll be phoning GSF and the main-dealers this morning for some prices, and i'll be posting details in my own thread 'Think we've found the problem'.

Hope thats of help to you!

p.s - hubby said it was really tight to get off, he used a key to help him!!

Dear all,

Thanks for your replies. I'll try to disconnect the MAF and give it a go then. Also will try to check the Labda probe this weekend at a friend who's got some knowledge of this.

@ WeeJase
Did you erase the error from the board computer? Otherwise it will come back everytime you hook it up!

@Leigh15
Thanks for this usefull tip on the secondary airpump. This must be the problem I'm fasing!

I'll let u know the outcome as soon everything is sorted out!

Well, regarding this bit...after almost half a year of complete bugger diagnoses from Seat and lot's of €, a friend recommended me to re-chip the car (it had been chipped and de-chipped by JD Engineering before I bought the car). A new chip of only € 150,- finally solved the problems and added some extra juice as well! ;)

As for this one I'm still facing the problem. The noice is now a standard issue everytime a start the car. A recent check-up by Seat also revealed that it must be the secondary airpomp. I've tried to remove popnails and replace them by bolts ands nuts, but the problem still existed. Most likely there is a small leak in the pump resulting in outside air being sucked in creating this weird noise. Replacing it would seem the next best thing to do, also according Seat.

I hope this is of any help!

Cheers,
Sjoerd
