There is a Golf 170 gt 5dr in my work car park and it looks pretty boring in fact he has it in a crappy colour for a GT which makes it look worse. I am sure that the 3 dr would look much better but if he is looking for a 5 dr then there is no contest. The Leon looks the mutts nuts. Get it with 18" wheels and bluetooth. If he doesnt do too many miles get the FR DSG which is awesome.

had exactly the same dilemma recently but we discounted the golf due to poor build quality and very uninspiring looks. To top it off you get poor amount of equipment as standard and the ride/handling is no where near as good as the leon.

NEW SEAT Leon

I had a new MK5 Golf GT140 4MOTION is was a nice car and although they do have some problems with certain parts of the build(door fit) it was still a better quality car inside and out,The Leon is cheaper to buy for a reason but I still prefer my Leon for the looks and the DSG witch is fantastic.

I know someone with a new Skoda Octavia and although it is not my type of car I have to say that it is better made than a golf and the Leon would come 3rd in terms of build and materials.

I would agree with the skoda as well - but its still got saloon car looks that dont do it for me :)

Although the dash's on the golf Mk5 I thought were terrible and the Mk4 golf we have now is better and thats done 100K. In all 4 we sat in the dashs creaked and felt flimsy, the astra mk5 was better put togther in my opinion :) .

NEW SEAT Leon

I never had a problem with My mk5 golf dash ,did not have any rattles and it was well made,My leon has a rattle though and certain members of family said to me straight away it did not have the quality of the golf and i have to agree ,But i like the set up better and the driving position i feel part of the car more than i did in the golf.

If You could get a new Leon with the build and aftersales of the skoda now that would be a very good car.

VW and Seat dealers in my experiance are nothing special,But when i went to my local Skoda dealer they were far better i would of bought one but i just did not like the car enough to go ahead.

The Golf is a better looking car with a nicer interior but it is priced as such. In addition it is due for a facelift later this year but the early pics of the MK6 show that its replacement is horrendous.

I had a GT 170 for a couple of months and it was nice but as every other car on the road is an astra or golf the attraction soon sent.

I also think they dont look as nice as the first mk's of golf. They have got wider and alot fatter. The new mk6 golf looks like they are still trying to wring any sort of style difference from a car that hasn't changed its shape........ever.

Boring

I looked at both, and although I ended up buying a 140 Leon Stylance due to the DSG and as I decided I didn't want the low bumpers and bumpy ride of the FR any more, I have to say that I can't see what all the fuss is about with Golfs.

I drove a DSG 170 TDi GT Sport and left it thoroughly uninspired. All he could come up with to justify the £5k difference between the Leon and the Golf was better quality of plastics and residual values. Fine, but what a dull reason to buy a car!

No cruise control, (to me) uninspiring looks, Bluetooth not as good or cheap, expensive, I don't think Climate Control is dual zone either is it?, the list goes on.

Plus the selection of colours and availability of the Leon is much better, for my money it was just a better value all-round package.

a couple of friends of mine are in the car leasing business and the new leons are expected to hold the same depreciation as the golf this time around. Mainly due to the amount of Golfs that will be sold and the relatively early mk7 coming out. Not sure how it will pan out but time will tell. I must admit I like the edition 30 golfs but all the other 5 doors are very uninspiring to look at compared to the leon.

When I was buying my new car I (an FR TDI) - my options were for the same money:

A basic 140sport golf (no BT or bigger wheels etc)
Or a fully loaded FR TDI

The FR TDI is un believably better value for money..

Personally out of the 2 i'd go for the Golf. though throw the Octavia VRS into the mix i'd have that.

I previously had a Fabia VRS and was looking at the Octavia VRS before I got the Cupra. The octavia is a nice car and space inside is immense.

The only downside is the skoda comments from the people who no nothing about cars!

For me it was a contender on 2 levels space (we are expecting a baby in circa 2 days) and the price (compared to the Cupra - 17k to 19k)

I did a test drive of the Octavia and the FR 170 on the test day back to back and in my opinion their isnt much difference. Cant say much for the 170 Golf though apart from it is the better finish (again as mentioned at a price)

Skoda aftersales is 10/10, compared to the 6/10 I would give seat ATM. Skoda (Liverpool) actually fixed non warranty items for free to help me part ex my fabia for the cupra!! now there is service! I cant even get seat (Milton K) to call me to tell me my parts are in (which I know they are!)
