If you do a search for SMOOTHED AIRBOX it will show you how to do it basically you need to smooth all the veins out of the top and bottom of the o/e box and then fit a high flow filter either PIPERCROSS or GREEN COTTON the dv wont be as loud as say a cossie but it works in a different way. It might be louder with an open fillter but then you would be just sucking in hot air from the engine bay

D.K.- I've got the same panel filter as you, and was wondering how much of a difference i'd get if i was to smooth my air box...i mean, is it really noticeably worth it?

There was a guy on one of induction kit war threds that i think said got about 7bhp from smoothing.
I'v not had mine rolling roaded (yet) or done any logs but accelaration did fell a lot smoother and more responsive, i also used a 3"feed pipe like others have done, the o/e pipe is about 2.5" x 1.5".
I dont know if its all in my mind but im happy :D

the search button will become your friend. the DV question has been asked many many times before. basically they don't tend to work as the 1.8T needs a re-circulating dump valve, the forge 007P works well but there is also the split-R from forge that also works. it is a 50/50 jobby that dumps back into the intake and into the atmosphere so you get the whoosh noise. with filters the choice is massive, there are filters from ramair, dynatwist, BMC and then there are the obvious K&N and pipercross filters. if you do decide on a induction kit it is best to have an enclosed filter with a decent cold air feed so you don't suck hot air into the engine. there are replacement panel filters too which are a cheaper option, green filters are rated highly on here.
if you eventually decide to get your LCR remapped (you will) then an uprated DV is a must as the standard plastic bosch valve tends to split under higher boost.

Thanks for being so helpful mate, is there any way of stopping it from sucking hot air into the open cone induction kit. Ive heard a lot about a heat shield but do they really work?

Think my mind is set on the green cotton induction kit with the Froge Split R D/V

jabba do an open JR induction filter with a massive heatshield. i think it is £200+ though!

If you have the ~200 sheets to spare I recommend it. You get plenty of noise (if that's what you like!) and Jabba claim a typical 5 bhp gain on their website.

My car actually made a 6 bhp gain on the dyno lottery due to this mod - so it's a decent tweak.

The heatshield basically spans the gap from the top of the wheel arch to the bonnet, and bends around the cone filter a bit to stop any hot air being drawn into the cone. (We hope anyway.)

Is it as effective as an enclosed induction system for keeping the inlet air temp down? Probably not.
But it is maybe a little 'freer flowing' and noisier (for those who like that) as it basically replaces the air box and/or associated pipes with a mere short cone piece. There's pluses and minuses to any solution I guess.

GTste, how much did you carbon filter based induction system cost? Looks interesting!

ok well im goin for the green cotton induction kit, gonna scout around now for one and see who has the best deal. Any thin has gotta be better than the standard one i have at the minute

forge 007p is best for performance. i got the k and n typhoon CAI and i got no complaints! i no some1 who had the split-r but changed for a 007p and noticed an increase in performance. he used to race a golf gti and lost every time since changing to the forge 007p he wins every time!

id say get the 007P and an induction kit if you want sound. the induction kit will give more sound than trying to get a dumping DV to work.

off topic, but my advice would be go 200 cell cat.
nats c()ck difference performance wise, but can save you lots of issues and most likely has a potential longer life span, particularly useful if its a downpipe and cat in 1. can be expensive..

I had green panel and swapped it for jabba induction kit,worth giving them a ring,i picked mine up for £170,i have no idea if it increased power but it definately increased air flow,pick up increased and top end high revs pulled harder,makes a good noise too with bailey recirculate dv.Heat shield works great,air filter is always cold even when shield is hot,its stainless steel too which is why its pretty pricey.Works though.

hi guys,i got an open cone for my lcr from halfords, pipercross for £17.99, i went in there looking for 1 made for the lcr but they didnt have1,so i looked at the 1s they had,i found 1 for a focus 1.8 for £34.99,half price for some reason,it looked big enough so i thought **** it i will try it.went to the counter and heared the words 17.99 please (result!!).went home and to my amazement the fitting kit worked perfectly on the lcr,what a result!!!
