Hang on there GB.....................Seat told me mine was gone (im a mechanic by trade) so investigated it myself. Found that my suspension springs were turning around the strut thus causing a squeek noise, and was in fact not the steering rack. Seat told me it wasnt covered by warranty either (after only owning the car for 5 months)

Note to self and others..............if your told its broke and its expensive, get it confirmed by another garage first.

Is the rubbing sound only apparent at slow speeds when turning? Was it accompanied by a rocking knock kind of noise (sounds like a bush or shock wobbling)?

when i went over potholes going round a right hand corner it sounded as if the wheel/shocker was loose it was just a hell of a rattle hope that helps and it was worse at low speeds

This sounds very familiar... Its sounds like the noise travels to the top of the shock? How many miles has your car done?

I'm also getting what sounds like a brake disc /pad rub at slow speed when turning left out of junctions.

ive got a hell of a knocking noise when going over bumps or bumpy roads, had one ball joint changed and its better now but still doing it so might get the other changed too.. BTW go to a parts reseller, my ball joint costed £7.50 and my mechanic mate fitted it.

now, one of my other mates has the same problem as you described (knocking only when turning) and my mechanic mate thinks its the driveshaft! but thats on a mk4 golf (basically same platform) so maybe worth getting that checked too?
