leon cupra vs mondeo

The cupra is in the body shop after being hit up the rear. Not much damage done just needs a new bumper. Anyway got a mondeo 130ps loan car and when I first drove it I thought crikey this thing can move. However the engine is coarse and the gear ratios really low, second gear is good for only 45 mph at the redline. My cupra would kill it good and proper! The good news is I have had an ongoing noise on my car which I thought was a problem, but after listening to the noises this thing makes my mind is at rest, the leon is so much quieter than this mondeo and the mileage difference is 104k! Thanks Mr Ford I can now enjoy my cupra again

PS I have had a fabia vrs as a car demonstrator(ex motor trade) and that would only do 50 in second on the red line, Pity the cupra tdi has taller gearing as mine will do almost 60 in second and 92 in third. It would probably be a second quicker to 60 with the same ratios as a vrs.

Thats all very well. But i cant say i feel taking the tdi all the way to the red line does it any advantage at all, it just feels as if the power is draining away...knock it up a gear and hit the torque/power band and away you go again.

You lose peak power after 4k, so taking it above that is a waste of time. And would probably explain why you got some strange noises on your car, as your killing it.
Wonder what the company who owns the hire car would think of the way your treating it?

I certainly am not killing my car as what do you think governors are for?
What about all you guys that have had remaps done, asking for another 70/100 nm from a stock crankshaft and pistons etc is going to shorten the life of an engine. Davey your comments are noted but my oil is changed every 5K so I am not the slightest bit worried that my engine is going to let go etc and to be fair who suggested that I am driving the hire car to the red line everywhere as I did not!
PS I am not suggesting remaps are wrong as I am having mine done when I get it back from the bodyshop. Maybe then i wont to have to rev it so high eh!

Pffft - i've been 'killing' mine on a daily basis since i got it. I rarely change up before 4k and when i'm thrashing around, i let it run to almost 5k - it doesn't stop accelerating either. How much you gain by cogging it down is probably lost in the gearchange, especially when all the roundabouts are 4 gears apart .........

Power all the way to the red line anyway!
I will keep you all posted on what happens when you remap a 112k leon tdi cupra and then give it some.

PS it was mapped at 93k too

I had mine remapped at around 24k and it's just gone past 44k today. I reckon it will cost me a turbo before i get rid of it but that's not the point, if it breaks i'll fix it. I refuse to buy a new turbo unless this one dies.

My average mpg ( bearing in mind it's almost all town driving) varies between 30 and 33 mpg which for the way it gets driven, i don't think is bad at all.

I never realised you were assuming it was good for those speeds at the red line, i imagined this comment was made after you had tried it.
I'll make sure i read your posts 5 or 6 times in future, and then ignore the obvious and assume it was made in error.

It depends what's done to the car. I bring my car to the redline a lot and with my stage 2 turbo it does not have any power loss to the redline. The engine is very strong mine has nearly 190,000 miles and still makes 221bhp on a RR.

Got my Passat mapped (~175bhp @ Awesome) at 92k miles, now on 142k

I'm with you Glynnd...... hire cars are meant to be used. Its a well known fact that hire cars can outrun anything without even getting out of 2nd gear so your claims of the Cupra being faster can't be completely true now can they ?!!!

I was once tempted to buy a hire car based purely on this fact, but only moments from exchanging cash did I come to my senses..... If I bought it, then no longer a hire car it would be and therefore no longer would it be amongst the fastest transportation on the roads. I ordered the Leon FR and a remap instead!

The remap is a worthy mod to your car. It'll still not be able to get anywhere near a hire car but it'll still feel so much better in the mid range and so much more refined than Henry's rep mobile.

Too right, hire cars are there to be thrashed as hard as you can. Especially if you don't pay for the fuel. As long as it still moves at the end it's ok. That's why you don't ever buy one.

It probably is not that much quicker but there is a little difference. The comaprison is the difference in the gearing as the leon is so much taller geared in 1st and 2nd. If the leon had the gearing of the mondeo then you could expect a sub 8 second 0 to 60 easily for the cupra where the mondeo is quoted at 9.8

I think if I were doing the Leon again though I might consider doing the clutch first then remapping at somewhere like Jabba on the rolling road with a better more tailored map for the car. Also it wouldn't smoke so much as the Revo map does (which = overfuelling). Saying that I have started an "Allards Stage 4 Fund" to try and get it to around 230bhp. Problem is the Mrs....... she calls it the "New En Suite Fund"!

I am going to get mine done in the new year. Although not over the top, say 180 due to the mileage on my car (113k now). I know that when I had my passat 130 done to 165 it made a hell of a difference and I suppose even more so as the Leon has the cornering billity to match the power when its mapped. Hurry up 2008!

continue from my first post.......UNLESS you have a bigger turbo , tdi cars work better at mid power everyone that has a tdi should know this , i had an mr2 turbo that i redlined all the time you know why ? because its a petrol and they work better at high reves SO TDI MID REVES PETROL HIGH REVES

Mondeo ST220

I had the same happen to my TDI 150 FR (someone driving into the back of me)
My car was in the workshop for 6 weeks as they couldn't source a boot.

I had a mondeo ST220 hire car and while there were things my FR doesn't have like Auto windscreen wipers and auto lighting, I definitely prefer my FR.

The mondeo is supposed to be quicker 0 - 60, it certainly didn't feel as quick and when I was over taking its definitely slower, the 3rd and 4th gear on the FR are huge.
The mondeo feels really heavy as well compared to the FR (The FR feels really light to me)

Best milage I got out of the mondeo was about 40MPG compared to the 47MPG from my FR

Big boot and cool cup holder on the mondeo though! LOL
