Searching for thread: Secondary air intake fix??

Hi all,

Ive been searchin and searchin, but i cannot find a thread i saw a few weeks ago that had nice colour pics that someone posted when they did DIY replacement/fix of their secondary air intake pump.

My engine management light keeps coming back on 50 miles or so after i reset it. My local VW/Seat independant, has explained that he thinks the actual secondary air intake pump has given up. He says its not really an important thing to rectify and plus it will cost me a fair bit to replace it all.

Im still getting codes for that and the lambda sensors (which i guess is for the same reason).

Can anyone find the link i saw where someone had managed to replace the pump fairly easily????

Thanks for any info.......

when you start the car and the choke is on it will sound louder and when it stops you'll get a slight whoosh from it, mine did and i thought instead of it getting louder i'd did as said in the thread and it still makes a noise but not as much. When i took mine out some of the rivets had snapped and there was a gap in between the two parts letting air in.

Thanks for the link, thats exactly the one i was after.

According to my mechanic, my pump is completely dead. ie not sucking/pumping anything at all. He says its not worth the fix as it isnt an absolute must to have one working anyway. I dont know enough about it to know if this is good advice or not.

The reason i knew there was a problem originally, is cos engine management light comes on and its registering DTC's that relate to the pump. I can clear the codes, but after about 50 ish miles of driving, the light is on again. I check it monthly to make sure there are no new codes showing, and so far its just ones relating to the pump. I will have to sort out a more permanent fix at some point tho...........

does anyone have any pics of where to find the hoses for the sec air inj pump?

i want to check them for leaks incase thats casusing my "16795 (P0411) Secondary Air Injection System (B2) - Incorrect Flow" fault.

had a quick look under the bonnet today and don't see any obvious split hoses but i don't have a clue what hoses to be looking at!

any help appreciated.

i've reset the code meantime.

you can always blank it if you dont want to put another one on

ideal.

ok, as i understand it (aside from making a hell of a noise and having all my workmates tell me my exhaust is blowing) the secondary air injection pump blows hot air into the cat on startup.

Does this having anything at all to do with emissions? Just worried that blanking it or leaving it on but faulty will cause an MOT failure???? forgive my ignorance.

I knocked this up (read: blatantly copied it out of Haynes) on another thread:

might try blanking it then as the noise of the pump has driven me mad for two years now. just hope the emmissions don't get too high from cold.

interested to know if anyone who has done this on there leon has had any MOT issues?

As i mentioned, rather than making a nasty noise that some of you seem to be experiencing, apparently my pump is as dead as a doornail, and my trusted mechanic says its ok to leave it as it is. Due for MOT in April (probably at the same garage), so i guess he knows what he's talking about!.............

Of course, i keep having to clear the codes, but otherwise the car seems to run fine.......

Thank you satilaboy that is exactly what i wanted:funk:

i take it you are going for it?

be interested to know how you fare come MOT with emmisions if you do this.

I'm due an MOT in august so i think i'll first try the fix for the pump housing to see if the fault code disapears and the noise stops

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/940861.aspx.

failing that i'm removing it. as i say though my only fear is failing the MOT on emmisions

Yeah my mot is due end of this month so depending on how quick the part comes from the good old US of A , the pump may still be on the car, but from what i understand the pump only works for a few seconds or minuits so by the time you get to the mot station it sould be up to temp and then not be a problem, if it is, what i may do is unplug the pump and see what happens if it fails i can always plug it back in

Well i have done it, removed the air pump:thumbup:, not as straight forward as the guide would suggest, getting the top hex bolt off the brackett was a bitch, i have made my own blank and i will order the proper one from the states and fit that when it arrives, i started it from cold and no lights came on, went for a drive and still nothing so it looks ok, mot in two weeks so we will see if it affects the emissions or not, fingers crossed that i dont have to put it back on.
