On the verge of buying a mk2

The Stylance has a far better ride than the Sport IMO and has just as many toys. The optional 17's don't spoil the ride too much either so this was the compromise I went for. The Stylance still feels sporty and handles very well, its just more compliant than the Sport.

I'm about to take the plunge... I'm on the verge of buying a mk2.

Former mk1 TDI 110 owner, I was forced to get rid of it in March due to a series of mechanical problems coinciding with the cambelt service meaning an astronomical bill or a trade-in-and-leg-it scenario. I'm ashamed to say I committed a heinous crime and bought a Focus TDCI Titanium. What a mistake... After 8 months of constant faults and useless dealerships I wrote the manager an arsey letter quoting fraudulent misrepresentation as well as choice sections of the sale of goods act... Much to my surprise they folded like a pack of cards and gave me my money back!

But I digress...

Having thoroughly enjoyed my two years of mk1 ownership (compared to the nightmare 8 months of Fraud ownership) I'm now looking at a mk2 - specifically a 2.0 TDI Sport. The only thing that worries me though is the supposedly unforgiving sport suspension. From what I've read, it's *very* hard - which could be an issue as I do a lot of town driving as well as motorway driving (and in West Yorkshire too - proud owner of probably some of the lumpiest roads in the country!). Is this a fair comment, or are the people moaning just being too twitchy?

Any other pitfalls I should know of before taking the plunge...

I'm so very tempted to come back to the Seat fold...

After the problems i have had with my fr tdi over the last year ive decided to try and get rid of it the car is ok in isolation but problems with the dpf, turbo solenoids (4 upto now) and the 'phantom misfire' im just a bit sick of it being off the road quite a lot.

Don't start scaring me with phantom misfires... That was the problem that plagued me with the Focus for the past 8 months! Anyway the FR is something of a different setup to the TDI Sport so I'm crossing my fingers... I've put a deposit down and I'm getting it on Saturday...

Wheee....!

Oh and it turns out that the first registered keeper was Seat UK, for the first 5 months of its life... Seems odd - I can understand a dealership registering it, as a demonstrator or whatever, but Seat UK?

The stealer is trying the hard sell of the "protection pack" now which is the GAP insurance and the paintwork protector. Now I know that stealer GAP insurance is a rip off and can be bought much cheaper elsewhere, but does anyone have any experience of the paintwork protector? I'm very sceptical of any product such as this that claims that you'll never have to polish your car again and that it will protect your car from tree sap and bird crap and nuclear holocaust (may not be true) so I'm guessing it's not worth the extra £100, right?

  • Skip the 'life shine' so called paint protector - waste of money IMHO.
  • Get the dealer to match any online quote you have for GAP insurance.
They act as an agent for the insurance company, and they earn money from commission on the number of policies sold, not on the premium paid. There is plenty of scope here to haggle.

I have the Autoglym Lifeshine paint protector.

Was a £250 option and a complete waste of money.

Yes it does give an extra coating to the paint, but you need to top it up at least twice a year. (I was told it needs no maintenance)

The car still needs to be polished, bird muck etc needs to be treated in the same way and I ended up with white powder all over the interior where they didn't put it on properly.

The Autoglym pack of products is nice, but I have seen the same pack for sale in Argos for about £40.

Deev,

Do yourself a favour and visit the Polished Bliss site:

http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/news.html

Have a good read of their excellent washing, polishing and detailing guides and then choose your products.

They are going to be closed for holidays soon, so all orders for Christmas must be in by next Monday, the 10th December.

I purchased the Basic Wash Kit, the JEFFS Werkstatt Carnauba Kit and the
Meguiars Quik Clay.
I am very pleased with all the products and the top-class service from Polished Bliss.

I got the 55 plate TDI Sport I mentioned in my first post. Largely happy with it - driving it everything just feels "right" - everything is where I expect it to be intuitively. And it's pleasingly rapid too :)

Some bad points - although nothing insurmountable... Both front alloys are very lightly scuffed in places - parking injuries no doubt (well, the last owner was female... :p). There is also a very slight ding in the driver's door, but it's not a sharp ding so one that should be able to be smoothed out when I have the time (and money!). Unsurprisingly the stereo isn't mp3 compatible despite the dealer's claims. The embarrassed sales rep "compensated" me for this by filling the car with fuel. Can't say I complained at current prices...

Also despite the dealer having done the 20k service, the spanner is still flashing. They tried to extinguish it but apparently didn't have the tools so I need to take it to a Seat stealer to get that done (I purchased it from a Toyota stealer). Or is that something I can do myself (ie is it one of those "press button a and hold button b whilst turning ignition to position 2 etc etc" jobs?)

Oh and finally, the stereo seems to work completely independently of the ignition! Can that be changed? I'd kinda like it to go off when I remove the key as I keep reaching my destination, jumping out of the car, then realising it's still playing! WTF?

Anyway moan over - I'm still happy. It puts a big smile on my face which is the main thing.

Photos soon :)
