Right please don't flame me, i don't think this is a stupid question.

i have always used 98+ in my car however on Sat i'm driving 500Mile in one day, going to be all motorway in the LCR (mapped)

I'm not going to be on boost much, let along giving it beans. Can i get away with just using 95. Seems such a waste spending the extra 6p just to burn it all away in 4 hours ??

Yes
According to the manual you only NEED to put 97 RON+ if high reving/giving it ****
Should be safe enough and just made me consider this too
Cheers

dont know about everyone else but I always use 97 in mine (not mapped) and then put in a couple tanks full of 99 now and again. I find I get better MPG from the 99 than 97 so I reckon 95 would be worse altogether.

what you could do is half/half.....thats what i do but i do only use v-power from shell as my hi-octane fuel as i found to my distress that bp and supermarket fuel made my car smoke,,,,as i thought i was burning oil but didn,t smell of burnt oil and after an injector clean and a couple of tanks of v-power no more smoking.......plus mixing both has given me very slightly improved mpg,,try it at least ,you won,t feel too guilty to your engine then..and to your pocket

My remapped Cupra runs fine on 95 RON up to about 5500rpm, at which point it misfires under load and retards the ignition. I don't realy cane it (or drive it) much so didn't notice that it was struggling to rev on the cheap stuff for about a week after the remap! I'd use 95 RON in mine for distance driving, but ONLY if I was sure there'd be no monkey business.

Here's what I get when motorway driving:

95 RON Supermarket: 330 miles per tank
V-Power: 400 miles per tank

I would say it was worth it.

Nothing at all to do with whether your driving hard or not, 99 RON means that you use less petrol to get the same amount of power output - the explosive output of the petrol is much higher than 95 RON.

250 miles to a tank?? You must have a very heavy right foot!

Even on my drive to/from work (A and B roads) I get 350 miles out of a tank of V-Power.

My average MPG over the last 2000 miles is 31. I don't exactly gun it everywhere, but I don't hang around either.

On the few occasions that I've had to use 95 my LCR has felt like a shadow of its former self.

Tesco 95 is utter garbage fuel, used a tank of it a few months back (local Tesco doesn't yet have 99) and had rough idle, hesitant acceleration and industrial amounts of steam coming out of my exhaust. :(

Got a regular source of V-Power these days though :) at £1.12/litre :censored: [:@] :help:

You can use 95 ron if you dont rev the car hard, even if it is mapped for 97/98/99.

As soon as you take revs above 5000ish, the ecu will go into limp mode.

31mpg in revo stage 1 car??........Achievable if you're not revving past 3000rpm in any gear and on a long motorway jaunt, yes!

Give it some beans, and you should be seeing 21-24mpg average especially on short journeys.

There's no way your giving it stick if you're getting 31mpg average. it's complete granny driving to achieve these figures :)

I have a 45mile motorway trip every morning and have experimented with all kinds of driving and if i keep revs below 3000rpm in each gear, i just manage just over 30mpg. Accelerate even mildly, 25-26mpg max. Boot it 15-20mpg

I give my LCR a lot of stick, my journey to work involves an excellent set of twisties and little traffic.

I'm more surprised than anyone that I'm getting those fuel consumption figures, but my trip computer doesn't lie!

Erm, what do you think is happening inside your engine?

It's simple chemistry - the spark causes the petrol/air mixture to explode, the force of which drives the pistons. 99 RON fuel produces more explosive force per unit volume of petrol. Therefore, you require less volume of 99 RON fuel to provide the same driving force to the pistons compared to 95 RON.

LC, LCR both adapt the fuel/air mixture depending on the grade of fuel and intake volume of air + some other parameters. When cruising at a constant speed, your car will consume less 99RON fuel than 95, resulting in improved MPG.

Well, i drove 240 Miles at 75 ish the whole way (saturday morning 6am - 9am no traffic) and managed to achieve 32.4MPG, i was basically looking at the read out the whole way, adapting my driving for the best figures. I used 30 litres, and then filled the car back to the brim.
Did a days work (yawn, Blackburn Vs Newcastle)
I had a party to get home to, so it's far to say i wasn't driving slowly, in busy traffic (speeding up and slowing down) and i made 28MPG (34.6 Litres)

Oh i was using 95Ron to achieve these figures (first time i've used it in a year of buying the car), don't really know what my point is, just thought i'd throw this up. I have no idea how people are getting 30MPG + over 1000 + miles of varied driving, makes me quite proud of my 26 over the last 3000.
