Engine warm up time

How long does it take for everyones 2.0tdi's to get up to operating temperature (which I assume is 90 degrees)?

My car is taking 6-7 miles of constant 60mph driving to get up to temp which I think is very slow and on short runs may only go up to 70 degrees. Once up to 90 it stays there but to be honest I never looked at how long it took in the summer as i wasn't waiting for hot air!

Mentioned it to the dealer when it was in for a service but they said they couldn't find anything wrong, would just like to know if I have anything to worry about i.e a partially opened thermostat.

I would expect during the colder months that it would take longer to warm up, not only due to colder air temps, but due to you dissipating heat, trying to warm up the inside of your car via the heater/blower or climate control. I also find that because the car is cold, I try and keep my revs lower, this also delays the car from reaching optimum temp. Just a thought anyway!

i can get all the way to work in the morning before it has even got to 70!
its about a 15 mile trip.

Hi.

My XL 2.0TDI DSG takes a similar distance to warm up fully. My journey to work is about a mile at 30mph, and then on to open road/dual carriageway. The one thing that I have noticed is that getting stuck in traffic whilst the engine is cold really does hit the consumption hard.

For information my TDI caravelle 2.5L also takes a similar distance to warm up, and has done for the last 10 years. If it is really cold however the Caravelle has an auxilliary heater which kicks in and that helps.

I just think the engine is very efficient, and therefore does not waste fuel easily.

My Ibiza TDI 130 was just the same, had to be driven a good few miles to get fully warm. If you started it and left it idling on a frosty morning it just didn't warm up.

My Passat TDI 130 (essentially same engine as the Ibiza) has an electrical coolant heater fitted, which means I get warm air within a couple of minutes. I monitored the coolant temp with vag-com after a cold start and you can see the temperature rise fairly quickly.

Next year I will be changing cars, back to Seat, and people wonder why I ask which models/specs came with heated seats....

I took a look at my stats the other day. Outside temp was 5 deg, took 5 miles for temp to get to 90 deg on the gauge. My drive takes me onto a dual carriageway within 1/2 mile of where I started from for 70mph speed.

under 4 mile to get to 90 deg this morning, generally takes about 2 1/2 to get to 70 deg (the point at which i go up a decent hill)

Think yourselves lucky, my subaru takes about 10 miles until I can thrash it!

Checked this yesterday,from cold took 2.9 miles only to reach 90 degrees,2.0tdi 140 with 4000 miles.This was on straight carriageway with no slow traffic.

Even my little 1.4TDi Arosa takes ages to warm though, once it took 11 miles before it reached its 90 degrease.

Round town it very rearely reaches temperature.

I have round though having the heater temperature set to the coldest place the cars engine warms up qiicker/ Although ive also noticed that if the car hasnt reached 90 yet, say its on 80 then putting the heater to hot will make the engine go colder and the temp needle starts to drop!

So you might want to try turning it to cold to get it warmed quicker.

My Arosa diesel may look like a city car but its not! takes ages to warm up and drinks the juice while its cold. Best to leave the town driving to my 1,0 Arosa i think

We also have a 2.5TDi T4 caravelle, the auxilliary heater is very effective, although it only comes on when its really freezing, otherwise that takes an age to warm up too.

Small petrol engines are better for the cold weather i think!

When I picked up my new (used) 2.0 TDI I did note it took forever to warm up - prob 6 miles/20 mins.
My Alfa V6 warms up to 90 within 5-6 mins even in traffic.
It probably is the fuel efficiency rather than thermostat - 50mg from a diesel around town -15mpg from an Alfa V6....
