PDI and Protection Detail on Leon FR TDI

Ok so as per this thread here:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=147719

I have picked up a new FR TDI in Candy White (flat) from a not very local Seat dealer (Autoworld in Sheffield)

As requested he left it alone and didn’t even wash it prior to me collecting it yesterday, left the transport wax on it and hence no scratches that I could fins when walking round it, it was pretty grubby tho!!

Anyway after a 200 mile run home yesterday I inspected it in the light today and found the dirt just sitting on the panels but mercifully it was scratch free.

Picture071.jpg

Started with a spray of 1:15 dilution of janitol (citrus degreaser) on the lower panels and a spray of Einsett Pre-Clean on all the other panels to loosen the dirt / transport wax before rinsing down.

Wheels and arches were also done with Janitol at 1:15 as it’s my version of an APC before being rinsed and dried with an old Sonus Der Wunder.

First wash with CG’s Citrus wash + gloss gave a good loosen of the crap and prepared for the next step.

Today was going to be an all hand day so I selected products that I knew worked well by hand and that I had handily stored in the airing cupboard to combat the fact it was freezing today!

Next off was a Sonus Green clay with CG QD as a lube,

Green because it’s a finer clay and as you can see after a pass on the bonnet / front panels not much was coming up on the clay and it felt pretty smooth when I ran a finger over it with the QD.
Picture115.jpg

I did find that given the temp the clay was working better when I kept it in some warm water and also I kept the QD sitting in some warm water (in a bucket) too. Even if it didn’t help the finish it did help my hands!!

After a rinse I cracked on with a second wash using CG’s citrus wash and gloss and then sheeted the car with an open hose to fully rinse.
Picture116.jpg

Drying was taken care of using Sonus Der Wunder towels using a different towel for shuts and lower, 3 in total.
Picture117.jpg

I used QD during drying and then left her to stand for a while. Found a few bits of transport tape in the shuts then stuck my paper “wings” in the mirrors to prevent any streak when applying the polish / wax.]

To keep my Wax Polish Soft and Natty’s Blue workable I had them by the heater to help with workability. The Einsett Was Polish Soft was applied by MF applicator as was the Natty’s and both were buffed off with premium microfibres.

At this point of course it started to rain so I backed the car up into my tiny garage (I can’t get the entire car in, has to be half at a time) and then started on the debadge.
Dental floss and a hairdryer were used to rid the backside of the Leon and FR badges, the residue was taken care of using some menz IP as it was stubborn to shift and actually \I ran a bit of Sonus grey clay over it at one point to get a good result.

Now you see it….
Picture121.jpg

Now you don’t!!
Picture122.jpg

I think it’s a lot cleaner with the badges off but that’s only my personal opinion, I de-badged the Scooby when I had it and kinda think less is more you know? Anyway the Seat boys will know it’s a FR even if no-one else does!!

Wheels were treated to some CG’s Wheel wax and tyres were dressed with Poorboys Bright and Bold using an old sponge applicator.

Glass was done with Einsett Glas Polish by MF applicator which I am nearly out of and think I might not use again as I am finding it quite dusty but the benefit was at least the dust was white!!!!!

Of course light had all but disappeared by this point so my after shots are pretty dark, the only good reflection shot I got were these 2 and they are not great!

First impressions are it’s a hard colour to get a good depth on ( and a shockingly hard colour to expose correctly when taking pics, I used my Sony DSC-P200 for the process ones and a Nikon D80 for the afters, I think if I persist on the D80 I will get it eventually.

Enjoy the results, I am pretty chuffed seeing as how it was only by hand and actually just a PDI detail and getting a coat of something down on the old girl as she was without any sort of protection and the weather here is shocking.

Lots still to do such as the interior to finish with Mk5 golf pedals, loose the dealer tax disc holder and get my number on it with pressed plates, let me know what you think, next comes the dodo wax!!!!!!!!

Very nice!! Jobs a good 'un.
Started to wash my car properly with TBM and so on. Just need to get some decent warmish weather to wax and prep it for winter.

Hi Dubnut,

I did similar to you, but used AG SRP (appllied with a PC) and then EGP leaving it for 2 hours to cure. Followed that with some Dodo Blue Velvet (my car is black) and 6 weeks later the water is still beading...

I am also v. impressed with the Poorboys Wheel Sealant (x3) I used...

I can well recommend the Dodo hard waxes...

@Jace - lol I also have a 307 cargo net from my 307cc - 3 cars ago!

fM

PS Yup, I'm an OCD and member of DW as well....

Nothing wrong with that!!:) I used SRP and EGP on one of my bikes recently because I found it to be a bit more durable and the SRP is a bit more forgiving on the plasticised paint. Came up a treat! trick with EGP is to use it very sparingly and allow 24hrs betweeen coats then reapply!

I have no idea what you are talking about with your SRP's and EGP's but that car looks amazingly clean. I have my Luna Grey FR completley de badged so it's nice to see another car join the DBC (De Badged Club ...........just made that up)

Yeah I'm a knob with acronyms.... I will remove the geekyness and explain SRP is Super Resin Polish (an autoglym product) and EGP is Extra Gloss Polish (again an autoglym product) typically they are a high street version and a popular wax / sealant from halfords!!:)

Sorry for the acronyms... :) A PC is a Porter Cable machine polisher.

Your car is look nice... Good depth to the wax.

Here's some piccys of my car, 6 weeks after the Dodo Blue Velvet. All I did today was wash it with Autoglym Shampoo and then chamois it dry...

Wax/Polish/Clay?!?!?

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to all these products so looking for some sensible advice.

Had a Black Magic FR for about 18 months now. Had a black car before so did appreciate how difficult they are to keep clean but this one looks so good when it's spotless I've decided it's worth spending a bit more time & money on products.

As I said I'm a beginner so looking for a fairly straightforward/high street solution and thought you guys posting on here would be able to make some suggestions.

Cheers

I would recommend the following:

1) Buy yourself one of these and then get one of these to prevent swirling in the paint work.
2) Wash with AutoGlym Car Shampoo OR Meguiars Gold Class
3) Clay the car using this Meguiars kit
4) Polish with AutoGlym Super Resin Polish
5) Seal with AutoGlym Extra Gloss Protection - leave for at least an hour
6) Use this to clean the exhaust
7) This to clean the windows and then this to keep them clean.
8) Finally, this is quite good for interior and exterior plastics.

These are the 'High Street' products I use and I think they are all very good. I also use Dodo Blue Velvet on top of the AG EGP and I used Poorboys Wheel Sealant, both purchased from this Trader.

Also look on www.detailingworld.co.uk for more info...

Cheers

Looks like money (& time) well spent if your photos are anything to go by!!!

Thanks very much for the tips - a trip to halfords is in order this weekend...

I'm test driving the Cupra tomorrow (just for fun really) so I reckon I'll order the black grille - can't believe what a difference it makes to the front end. I enquired when booking test drive earlier this week - does £50 fitted (approx) sound about right??
